A painted plywood bookcase book-case can be a distinctive piece of furniture, as well as t just a convenient place to shelve books and favorite objects. And it's economical when you make it yourself. With a power saw, you can do the job quickly and easily without having to shelve your budget at the same time. This modular design offers adjustable units that allow a variety of setups: you can stack the modules six high for a wall unit, or change them around to give your living area a totally new look. Set several under a low window to hold plants. The rest can be stacked to the ceiling on the opposite wall. Or, you can build them waist high to form an attractive attrac-tive room divider or define a conversation group. To get started, obtain the materials you will need: two panels of 34 "x4'x8' interior grade plywood, white glue,, wood putty, 6d nails, sealer, fine sandpaper and semi-gloss semi-gloss or gloss enamel or spray paint to suit your needs. With your power saw set for a 12" cut, rip two 4x8' plywood sheets into 12"x8' 1 lengths. Once you've done that, using the 12"x8' boards, cut five pieces measuring 12"x34-l2", six pieces measuring ,12"x3Q- 12", arid 12 pieces measuring measur-ing 12"xl4-l4". In each of the 12"xl4-14" 12"xl4-14" end pieces, cut a l4"x 34" rabbet three inches down from the edge, as shown in the accompanying diagram. Then take eight of the end pieces and cut slots measuring 3-34"x 34"-1-12" in from the edge. Refer to the diagram and slot 4 of the end pieces accordingly. For the back slot the five boards 2-l4"x 34" and 1-12" in from the edge. Next, using your saber saw, round off the corners with a 1-12" radius, At this point, it's a good idea to fill the edges with wood filler and smooth sand until all edges are even.
