The Beavers grabbed their first two games to moved into in-to semi final action against Gunnison, but the roof fell in when the Bulldogs took advantage ad-vantage of a cold shooting Beaver five on the third day of the tournament. Jess Cox and David Eyre cornered 21 each in the opener against Altamont to lead the Beavers to a 65-47 win over the Longhorns. Brian Bri-an Morgan and Burt Myers combined for 17 from the guard line and midway through the 4th period all of the Beaver squad had a chance to test the huge floor of the Marriott Center. The second day the Beavers Beav-ers matched up with perennial peren-nial rival Kanab in the quarter quar-ter finals. Kanab had two victories against the Beavers Beav-ers in league action; one in three overtimes at Cowboy-ville, Cowboy-ville, so everyone knew it would be one of the key classics of the tourney. A classic it was, as the action ac-tion was tight and Intense for four quarters. Everyone figured another overtime game was imminent when the score was tied with 20 seconds sec-onds remaining in the fourth quarter. Wayne Mickelson had the ball for the Cowboys after Cox tied it, 51-51, with 44 seconds left. Mickelson Mick-elson ran the clock down to 20 seconds but he traveled, setting up the Beavers for the final opportunity to score. Myers, Brian Morgan Mor-gan and David Eyre moved the ball methodically until the final four seconds and that is when Myers made his move to the basket with a running jump shot that pierced pier-ced the nets with one second sec-ond on the clock. The final score was 53-51. for Beaver Beav-er in a dramatic finish. Myers My-ers finished with 19, while Craig Blackner, who had a super game defensively and offensively, added 11. Cox only had nine, but his key basket with 44 seconds left in the game was crucial. Neil Marshall only ended up with one bucket, but his key two points gave Beaver a two point edge at the 3:20 mark, 48-46. Brian Morgan added 5, David Eyre 6, and Don Roberts Rob-erts 2 for the rest of the scoring, Eyre did a super defensive job on Gary Glover, Glov-er, and the Boards with Cox, Glover canned his usual 24 points but Scott Robertson and Klepie Finau were held to 16 between the two which made the difference in the game. Gunnison caught the Beavers Beav-ers cold the next day.tak-ing day.tak-ing advantage of every long rebound and break possible to capture a 6-148 win, and a state final berth. Kenneth Nielson, Louis King and Blake Coates destroyed des-troyed the Beaver defense on outside shooting. King filled in for injured David Warren who held the center spot for the Bulldogs all year. Warren was hospitalized hospital-ized Thursday night, after crashing to the floor in the Piute game. On Saturday the Beavers met Pangultch for the second sec-ond time of the year. Beaver defeated the Bobcats Bob-cats in the opening game of the seaon in overtime but succumbed to a foul shot at the buzzer, 63-61, by sophomore Ricky Robinson, to edge the Beavers for the 3rd spot in the tournament. Valley hung on to take the Championship away from Gunnison in the final seconds, sec-onds, 51-48.
