' I The Wilderness Inventory that is being made on Utah public lands by the Bureau of Land Management has now moved into the "intensive inventory" phase of the study. Purpose of this phase, according ac-cording to BLM, is to obtain ob-tain the information necessary neces-sary to make a determination for each inventory unit included in-cluded as to whether all-or all-or part of them - have or don't have the wilderness and roadless characteristic criteria required for Wilderness Wil-derness Study Area identification. identi-fication. This information will be the basis for recommendations recom-mendations by the district managers to the BLM State Director. Following the first phase of inventory and after BLM had recommended some areas be dropped from the study, public hearings were hdlt to get input. BLM personnel per-sonnel have said that little lit-tle comment was received from the Beaver County area concerning units in the area. During the intensive in ventory, which is now in progress, the public is invited in-vited to participate in field inventories, workshops and meetings. Each BLM district dis-trict will publish a schedule of Its field inventories. All comments by the public concerning the intensive inventory in-ventory should be directed to the BLM district that manages the unit being discussed. dis-cussed. Besides- the Mountain Home area, 19,726 acres, which was added to the intensive in-tensive wilderness study, Wah Wah units 204B and 205 containing 35,407 acres and 14,191 acres respectively, were retained for intensive wilderness study along with 216 which is contiguous with a large unit in Nevada. All are highly mineralized areas, 204B bordering on known Molybdenum, alunite, clay and uranium deposits. These areas provide no significant sig-nificant wilderness characteristics charact-eristics other than they are roadless. However, if retained in wilderness designation, they could effectively curtail the development of these valuable valu-able resources, and stifle the Aconomv of Beaver Countv. MOLYBDENUM TOUR: Pine Grove Associates took a bus load of local residents to Pine Grove to look over their molybdenum operation. The company, a joint venture of Getty Oil and Phelps Dodge, is exploring a moly discovery in Pine Grove. The group first gathered at the high school on Saturday morning for an explanation of the . project, then to the company offices to see what the ore looked like, then to Pine Grove, where they watched as a core was pulled. The BeaverCountyCommis-sion BeaverCountyCommis-sion urges residents to become be-come involved in the study and field trips and to have a massive imput into the final fi-nal designation of these areas. The BLM has published a "Final Initial Wilderness Wilder-ness Inventory". Realizing that the guidelines of the inventory are subject to contradictory con-tradictory interpretation, the BLM in the booklet, has described the criteria used during the inventory. It is basically the same that was used during the initial inventory, in-ventory, however, now there will be a much more in-depth in-depth inventory done on the units. Comments will be used to determine whether specific units are kept in the wilderness wil-derness inventory or they are dropped. The County Commission urges any local resident, particularly those with some knowledge of the units being considered, to let their feelings feel-ings be known. They have expressed concern that too much land will be locked up in wilderness status if local lo-cal residents do not get involved in-volved in the public input process. |
