Show Is pure notcr opipc dream The ideal, advocated by some people, to aim for completely com-pletely pure water freedom Minerals, does not recognize the reaUties in the relationships relation-ships between water plants and salt, according ; to .Dr. Paul rhristensen, Utah State He explained that though relatively pure water from rain and snow falls on the; mountain and range landwa-tersheds, landwa-tersheds, it soon begins to1 pick up minerals. As it en, ters the soil, it dissolves some of the minerals in the soil. The plant roots remove part of the water, and the minerals tend to concentrate! in the remaining- water. JusJ by moving through the tor est landscape and the soil mantle under the plants, the water becomes laden with minerals that some people may identify as pollution. The farther the water gets from its source the higher the concentration of these dissolved minerals. Dr.: Christensen explained that this process has gone on as long as there has been water wa-ter and plants on the earth. If we were to seriously restrict re-strict drainage of water through the soil, the minerals miner-als would accumulate sufficiently suf-ficiently to prevent growth of plants or kill them. |
