Show Kaiparowits j decision a must! Politicians and bureaucrats alike, heaved a sigh of relief when Cal Edison and San Diego Gas gave way to inflation and the environmentalists, and said they would not build Kaiparowits. To them it meant that they would not be forced to make a decision. But, the companies did not withdraw their permits. The E.I.S. and all the work has been done. Only the final decision is remaining. That decision has been promised by May 1. We believe that the companies and residents of Southern Utah are entitled to hear that decision. We believe that the Utah delegation in Washington D.C. must insist that Sec. Kleppe announce his decision. To do less means that all the millions of dollars and hours of efforts by everyone concerned is a total waste. Even more, it means that if these companies, or others, who may wish at a future date to go into a similar venture, will have no idea of what the final decision would be. Therefore, they might well be forced to spend even more millions of dollars, only to have the decision go against them. A final decision is a must! Only then will the people of Southern Utah know if they may develop the natural resources surrounding them, and develop a healthy economy and environment for future generations of Utahns, or if they, because they choose to live in Southern Utah, will be relegated to being caretakers of federal lands, as a play ground for the affluent residents of the industrialized areas of the country. We call upon Senators Garn and Moss, Rep. Howe and McKay to insist that Sec. Kleppe keep his word and make that decision. We urge all Utahns and honorable citizens everywhere to write them and Sec. Kleppe requesting the final decision be made. "Red" |
