'O' o Vv , si ; -b.-fQ.Ao rf" 'Jfi i 7or i f) by CAROL S. LEMON V5l DelRoy Craw was born and raised in Minersville. "We did all sorts of things as kids," he recalls. "I remem -her I'd pump the bellows for the local blacksmith when I was so small I'd have to jump to reach the handle and for a dime I'd do a neat jig dance on the slab table top. I used to get up a 3 a.m. every morning to milk 14 cows by hand before school. I also worked in the mines. When I was sixteen I worked on the 1,800-foot level as aTimber-man's aTimber-man's Helper. A short time later I became a full fledged Timberman, making $9.60 a day a good wage for a youngster in the early '40's." "When the war began, I went off to join the Navy. What a change forakidfresh from the farm. I traveled around the world three times. Also had three ships shot out from under me. Once, I was found floating in the water 9-12. hours after my ship had been torpedoed. My res -cuerers were amazed that I was still afloat as I wasn't clinging to anything when they found me plus the fact that I had two broken legs and other injuries. Whether I had had some means of support, or whether it was an act of Providence, I still don't know. I spent six months in in the Anglo-American Hospital Hos-pital in Cuba, then continued my service in the Pacific." "After the war I lived in California and worked reconstructing, re-constructing, remodeling, and rebuilding the Presidential Presiden-tial Line luxury liners. They were changed completely in decor and furnishings often to suit the passengers." "My wife, Eleanor, and I are the parents of four children. chil-dren. When they were growing grow-ing up we really enjoyed the California beaches. Bodego Bay was a favorite spot. We'd dig for clams and have fresh clam chowder on the spot. We now have two grandchildren grandchil-dren whom we miss very much." "After aheart attack, Ide-cided Ide-cided to come back home . Not much had changed in the 30 years I'd been away. One thing I missed was the old high school. It had a fine, large gym and a nice swim -ming pool. I was sorry to see it go." Hobbies? Yes, DelRoy's always had hobbies, but he once . lived neighbors to four families who had an interesting, inter-esting, but expensive hobby a model train set-up. They had cities, villages, bridges, and tunnels connecting their basements. Their trains ran on schedule every day just like the Milford station. They had a lot of fun. "I've always loved the mountains, trapping and prospecting. My grandfather and an old Indian taught me how to trap when I was just 10 years old. I still do skinning, skin-ning, grading, and selling of pelt for others as well as my -self. I've found trapping to be a profitable sideline." "I do enjoy gardening. I can really let off steam while I work and find it very calming calm-ing and relaxing. I love to see things grow. This past year I harvested over 3,000 cucumbers, cucum-bers, bushels of tomatoes, plus all the rest. I have a sure-fire bug control just turn my hens into the garden. gar-den. They may peck at a squash or two, but they really real-ly kept the bugs down. I've noticed a real change in the growing season over the years. I remember as a kid, taking banana muskmelons thre e feet long, 40 and 50 pound watermelons, and other oth-er produce toMilfordto sell. We grew celery, peanuts, and there were orchards of every kind." "I enjoy refinishing and restoring old furniture and other 'prizes' I find at the dumps. I have quite a collection col-lection of horse collars, saddles, sad-dles, harnesses, etc. And when I have them fixed up, there is enough horse trader trad-er in me to usually find a buyer for them." DelRoy has an old Haus-chidt Haus-chidt phonograph complete with lots of old-time records. rec-ords. It used to use bamboo needles. One of my favorite items was a needlepoint of a beautiful mountain lion, done by Eleanor's grandmother, with detail and stitching so fine you'd swear you were seeing an elegant oil painting. paint-ing. For the past nine months DelRoy has served as County Deputy Sheriff and Minersville Miners-ville Town Marshall. "I enjoy en-joy my work. I also like working work-ing with the children and young people." A friendly wave and a smile sometimes makes it all seem worthwhile. worth-while.
