Show tape writing QlunitG LI.S. preparation of an environmental environ-mental impact statement (EIS) analyzing the possible effects of the proposed Alunite Alu-nite project in BeaverCoun- I ty is now underway, announced announc-ed Paul L. Howard, Bureau of Land Management state , director for Utah. ( The Department of the Interior In-terior has given the BLM j In Utah approval of the f with preparation of the statement. Mr. Howard said a team under the direction of Harold E. Isaacson of Cedar Ce-dar City will prepare the document. The Alumet Company, j which is a partnership of j Earth Sciences, Inc., National Nation-al Steel Corporation, and t The Southwlre Company, Is t proposing the alunite devel opment. Alunite ore would be mined and processed at the project site in the south end of Wah Wah Valley, which is approximately approx-imately 30 miles southwest of Milford. Alumina, the primary pri-mary raw material for aluminum, alu-minum, would be the major product. Potash fertilizer and sulfuric acid would also be produced in the process. The sulfuric acid would be used to treat phosphate rock from Idaho to produce several sev-eral types of phosphate fertilizers. fer-tilizers. A 70-megawatt power generation gen-eration plant would be built to produce electrical power and steam for use in processing. pro-cessing. Coal for the power and processing plant would come from a new mine near Price, Utah. Water would come from deep wells In Wah Wah Valley. Several access roads and a 20-mlle railroad spur would also be constructed. Information outlining specific spe-cific mining practices that would take place at the alunite alu-nite mine and a proposal for a processing plant adjacent to the mine have been submitted sub-mitted to BLM by Alumet. The company Is currently carrying on meteorological studies at the proposed plant site to assist in assessing impacts of the proposed project pro-ject on air quality. They plan to submit this information to BLM sometime in December. De-cember. Comments from concerned concern-ed individuals or interest groups are welcome throughout through-out the data gathering and analytical process of EE preparation, Mr. Howard explained. Other federal and state agencies will also provide pro-vide information for this Impact Im-pact statement. Information may be submitted to the BLM Environmental Project Office, Of-fice, 491 South Main, Cedar City. After preparation of a draft EE, public meetings will be held and a period will be provided for public com -ment. The BLM state director noted the EE will not recommend rec-ommend any particular course of action, but will be an analytical tool to be used in making decisions about the proposed development. |
