Show A new facility in Provo, and an attempt to move the Cedar City Drug and Alcohol Alco-hol Center to St. George, which didn't materialize, threaten the existence of the Cedar City facility. Ken Joseph, administrator at the Cedar City facility, has put out a cry for help to save the center forSouth-ern forSouth-ern Utah. Local AA's also have enlisted our cooperation. coopera-tion. -0- In an effort to study a situation situ-ation with which we are not familiar , we learned that If the Cedar City facility is closed, the closest one will be in Provo. Reports indicate that the Cedar City center has done a good job, though not always at a profit, for many years. In the balance, It would seem that Southern Utah and Beaver County would best be served by maintaining the Cedar City office. Ken Joseph Jo-seph would like letters of support to help do just this. Write to: Douglas Dinsmore, Utah Alcoholism Foundation, 2880 So. State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. A copy of the letter should go to Kenneth Ken-neth Joseph, Alcoholism Rehabilitation Re-habilitation Center of Utah, PiO. Box 85, Cedar City, Utah 84720. -0- Boy, did I get in hot water with the ladies last week! First off, Ann Marie didn't like her picture on page one. While she was criticizing our , photographic ability (we thought the pix was pretty good), she discovered we'd somehow spelled Ann Marie, 'Rose Marie'. Then she did hit the fan. Before we could get Ann Marie calmed down Annncli to explain the intricacies of the publishing business, and stop her hysterical laughing at our stupidity, we got a . phone call from (ha Prinlk. -0- Joyce, also in a state of hysteria, told us that the picture pic-ture in the Artnik sidewalk sale ad in no way resembled her or any of her employees. Explanations as to how she'd look if the sidewalk sale got rained out were to no avail. In our usual calm, we explained ex-plained that the character In the ad was intended to attract at-tract attention and therefore customers, and that she had better get back on the job before all the customers (at- j tracted by the ad) knocked j down her door trying to be j first to get the tremendous j bargains she was offering. -0- That crisis over, we discovered dis-covered that the new FCAG Dept. of Health is planning to promote flouridation of water throughout the 5-county 5-county area. Obviously, they did little I research on their subject, j and are unaware that Milford ! and Minersville both have i natural fluoridation. Had ! they but checked, they would i know that tests were run last J year comparing local youngsters young-sters with those living in areas with only a couple of years of fluoride In their drinking water and those without fluoridation of any kind. The results are on file with the State Dept. of Health and University of Utah. -0- Reading on a bit further, we found a report on sewage : systems in the 5-county area. None are listed in Beaver County, though Mllford's sewer system is the oldest continuous existing system in Southern Utah. Beaver City has had a partial sys- tern for many years and are just completing a brand new system encompassing the whole community. -0- j Just In time, too! The Minersville Min-ersville Reservoir shows' the results of years and years of allowing Beaver's untreated untreat-ed sewage to be dumped into the Beaver River. It's particularly bad this year, since the late, cool spring held the run-off back until Beaver farmers began taking irrigation water, and as a consequence, the reservoir reser-voir is low, warm and so full of moss already, it's beginning begin-ning to stink. -0- Some fish are reported to have soft spots in their flesh, ( Continued on Page 2 ) HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Pae One) and if you leave your boat in over two hours ai a time, it will develop a slick skin. Possibly, the Jeep Patrol's Pa-trol's speedboat races this weekend will stir up the water wa-ter and chop up the moss enough it will go on downstream down-stream and maybe help fertilize fer-tilize the Minersville fields. It's ironic that as most of Utah suffers from late spring floods, Beaver County faces the loss of its greatest fishing fish-ing resource, the Miners- ville Reservoir, because so little water is being allowed to get that far downstream. It proves that stealing rights at the head of the stream are better than first rights below the reservoir. Already, Minersville farmers farm-ers are being cussed for draining the reservoir too low. -0- That night we read how Congress is going to punish the auto manufacturers if their 1978 cars don't deliver at least 18 miles per gallon. Phooey! You and I are the ones that will be punished in the form of higher prices. But industry will be the whipping whip-ping boy. -0- One answer to the energy crisis is over 40 years old. The old Model A Ford engine which delivered 30 miles to a gallon. With today's suspension, suspen-sion, lightweight, streamlined stream-lined bodies, and the 55 mph speed limit, they should deliver de-liver 40-45 mpg. But then, that would be the easy way. -0- Speaking of the 55 mph speed limit, which is credited cred-ited with saving so many lives (figures disputed), we heard one TV commentator the other night who blamed the speed limit and its resultant re-sultant lack of fatal injuries on the lack of organ transplants trans-plants available. That's got to be coming in the back door. -0- There was one bright spot - in our day Thursday; Dale -Jensen volunteered to help . with the county fair. He wanted want-ed a different department than we're in charge of, but shucks, it's still the best offer of-fer we've had. If anyone else wants to get in on the action call, write or grab us on the street. It's going to be a good time county -wide, and we urge you to get involved. |
