Show IT'S THE AMERICAN WAY The legislators are off to a flying start and with advance filing of bills and other preliminaries underway before the opening day, some actions have already been .taken and in the first hustle and bustle, most of us haven't had time to get informed on the bills, and proposals before, be-fore, and already acted upon. In the first flurry the Senate has seen fit to pass a bill, naming the Elk as the state animal. We will hope that the House takes long enough in their deliberation of this trivial bill to discover that the stately animal s not native to Utah and give consideration to the mule deer or some other creature of the wild which finds its home in all corners of the state. Due to the fact that things are moving so fast and the need for a better informed constituency, Senator Wad-dingham Wad-dingham and Rep. Lee are attempting to set up a line of communication with the home folks. They will hold, along with other neighboring legislators, a series of meetings, meet-ings, to be held in Salt Lake City, and to which all of the Mayors, Town Presidents and County Commissioners will be invited, or have someone represent them. All other persons who are interested are welcome to attend. ... These meeting dates will be published in this paper if advance notice is given in time for publication. The first meeting which was set up Monday, and held Tuesday, was mainly to get future meeting dates set up and to get opinions on legislation now before them. The meetings will give Sen. Waddingham and Rep. Lee this added opportunity to use the thinking of their constituents. Also, a pet project of Roy Young and being maintained main-tained by the MHS American Problems Class under the guidance of Enoch Swain is something new to Milford, and quite possibly unique to the state and without a doufot to a town of this size, is Milford's own little legislative office. In an effort to inform the people of Milford of the legislative process, give you a chance to read for your self the bills, and their amendments as they are added, Roy Young has arranged for the bills, immediately upon printing to be mailed to Milford. The American Problems class will sort the bills, file them by number on the shelves erected in the old restaurant building next to the Banks Barbershop where you may wander in at will and read them over. The only requirement necessary is that you have the desire to know what is going on. Few of us realize the mechanizations, horse trading, compromises, and just plain nonsense which takes up so much of the legislator's time. Only a visit to the state house to see them in action oops! almost spelled that "inaction" will give you the total picture, but, reading the bills, seeing the changes made from day to day, will give you a far better picture, than any condessation by a newspaper writer, or a radio or tv commentator. And if you still can make that trip to the state house, you'll be more aware of what's going on. This is a fine thing, these people are doing for the community, lets all make an effort to support them in their endeavor to keep us informed, and use this information informa-tion to advantage in sessions with our legislators, to inform in-form those who represent you. Time is much too short for the legislators to contact con-tact each and everyone of us individually, so it's up to you to get informed and use the means available to inform in-form those who representate you. There is too much at stake in this day and age to just wait and vote a legislator out of office that doesn't do what you expect him to don't wait see that they know what you want, and then see that they follow through on these wants, but first, get yourself informed. |
