Show CAN WE AFFORD TO SCOFF? By BART STEELY "Only a damn fool will slit his throat while being offered a pot of gold with which to habilitate himself" him-self" B.S. Can Milford, for years ever hopeful of new busi-neses busi-neses and industry to buoy its sagging economy, afford to scoff at the business and good will of the copper-seeking copper-seeking Shield Development Co. because of rumors spawned of skepticism? Shield is spending $2 million initially and we repeat, initially to get the old processing mill just outside the city into shape and put several mines into production, thus providing us with the new industry we have so long awaited. Yet there are those who will listen to rumors, mostly to the effect that this is just another false alarm; that the company is just putting up another false front to promote stock sales. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Shield company is here to make money mining copper. It is not selling stock and its program calls for long-range operations. It has spent thousands of dollars quietly probing this area for copper. This was not done overnight. It required many months of exploration. The decision to mine here was made two years ago. Only the acquisition acquisi-tion of 33 square miles of land delayed operations. The company also decided that it would sub-contract some of its work, such as trucking the ore from the mines to the mill and hauling the processed product from the mill to the railroad loading area for delivery to the smelter, smel-ter, all in order to help this community financially. The company could have saved money in the long run by importing a fleet of its own trucks from Canada to do that work. Fortunately, most of the rumors running rampant are just that, but a few obviously have been aimed at attempting to downgrade and even discredit the Shield company. It behooves every citizen of the community to have faith and confidence and to get firmly behind Shield. The community won't regret it, and it may be in for some surprises if it gives its whole-hearted support to this new industry . |
