Show Four Corners Region Gets $2.09 Million In j Federal Assistance The Four Corners Regional Commission has received $2,-090,000 $2,-090,000 in supplemental grant funds from the US Department Depart-ment of Commerce, it was announced an-nounced today by Orren Beaty Federal Co-chairman of the Commission. The money will be used in support of projects of Federal agencies in furtheranc:? of tha Commission's program to encourage en-courage accelerated economic development in the Four Corners Cor-ners Region, Beaty said. The Region includes 92 coun ties in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. The Commission Com-mission is a Federal-State agency ag-ency established under the Public Works and Economic Development Act to draw up and carry out long-range programs pro-grams to create jobs and boost income in the region. Baty noted .that the $2.-090,000 $2.-090,000 is a sizable increase from the $750,000 expended by the Commission during the last fiscal year for project activity. ac-tivity. Beaty said, projects must fit within the overall system of I priorities approved by the I Commission. These include such things as highways and access roads to aid industrial, ' mineral or tourism develop I ment, and technical training I Echools to improve employment employ-ment prospects and the earn- I ing capacity of the people of the region. The Commission's staff, working with Federal and State agencies, has developed a preliminary list of projects, Beaty said. The projects must be processed and evaluated before the Commission meets to consider approval, the Federal Fed-eral Co-chairman added. Governor John A. Love of Colorado is State Co-chairman f the Commission. Other members are Governors Jack Williams of Arizona, David F. Curgo of New Mexico and Calvin L. Rampton of Utah. The funds received by the Commission today are in addition ad-dition to $1,119,000 received . earlier from the US Depart- ment of Commerce to sutKoort ! pected on where the funds will be committed. The earlier grant, Beaty eaid, is to be used as follows: $144,000 divided equally between be-tween the four States' planning plan-ning departments for research leading to development of the region's overall economic development de-velopment plan. $500,000 for studies and technical assistance directed and supervised by the Commission. Com-mission. $475,000 for salaries, rent, travel, printing, mail and other oth-er administrative expenses. The Commission's staff is headquartered at Farmington, New Mexico. The Federal Co-chairman's Co-chairman's offics and a liaison unit of the Commission are located in Washington, D.C. |
