Show LEGION'S RELIEF PROGRAM The action taken by The American Legion in endeavoring en-deavoring to secure funds for a Viet Nam Relief Fund should meet with the approval of every loyal American. Eldon James, National Commander of The American Legion, recently returned from a trip to that area and he was highly impressed with the work being done by American servicemen in caring for the civilian population in South Viet Nam. This type of endeavor inspired Commander Com-mander James to inaugurate his program for funds to aid in rehabilitating the South Viet Nam people who have been so cruelly affected by warfare in their home environment. en-vironment. Commander James reports that The American Legion Le-gion is now ready to receive gifts and that details have been worked out so that contributions to the Legion Fund will be parceled out to various agencies according to need. He emphasized that every penny will go directly to official offi-cial agencies supporting civic action programs in hamlsts and villages in Viet Nam, and that not one cent will be used for the expense of fund raising. It seems to us that this is an" extremely worthwhile program and we have little doubt that Commander James will succeed in his ambitious program to provide a measure meas-ure of relief for the women and children particularly who are victims of Viet Cong aggression. It has never been the policy of this newspaper to use its columns for general solicitation purposes, but in this instance we are firmly convinced that the cause is just and the need is great. We join with Commander James in urging financial assistance immediately for the long-suffering long-suffering civilian populaton of South Viet Nam. |
