Show NEW CHEMICALS FOR ALFALFA WEEVIL Two new chemicals have recently re-cently been registered for use in controlling the alfalfa weevil, according to Reed S Roberts Extension entomologist, Utah State University. Furadan is a relatively new carbamate, originally registered for control of corn rootworm. It can now be used to control the alfalfa weevil as well. This chemical is reported to have a long residual life against alfalfa al-falfa weevil larvae. Furaden contains the active ingredient carbofuran. It can be appied shortly after the first larval feeding is observed, much earlier ear-lier than most other insecticides insecti-cides Depending on the dosage applied it can be used within 28, 14, or 7 days before harvesting harvest-ing the alfalfa. The second chemical is a new product called Supracide 2E. This is an organic phosphate. It is available as an emulsifi-able emulsifi-able solution. It can be applied within 10 days of harvest or feeding to livestock. Registration of these two compounds brings the total to 13 different chemicals or combinations com-binations of chemicals available for alfalfa weevil control. Follow Fol-low the manufacturer's directions direc-tions carefully for all of these, Roberts cautioned. Growers wishing additional information on thee use of any of these chemicals may contact their county extension agent. |
