Show Senator Moss Supports Social Security Change Senator Frank E. Moss (D-Utah) has announced his support of an amendment to the Old Age and Survivors Insurance provisions of the Social Security Act which would allow a man to retire at 62 years of age rather than at 65 with full benefits. At the present time, women may retire at 62 with a reduced pension, pen-sion, and passage of the amendment amend-ment would give men the same privilege. The size of the reduction would be worked out on an actuarial actu-arial basis. "This amendment is both humanitarian hu-manitarian and sensible," Senator Moss said. "I am confident that people who are able to work will want to do so in order to draw their full retirement benefits. On the other hand, people who are not able to work can stop when they need to and have something to live on." The senator said the amendment would not add any significant amount to the cost of government, and would not require an additional addition-al payroll tax. He said approximately approxi-mately 1.8 million men would be eligible for retirement under the provisions of the amendment. "I believe strongly that people who are well and active should be encouraged and permitted to work as long as their situation warrants," war-rants," the senator said. "But people peo-ple who become ill or suffer some limitation should be allowed to retire re-tire earlier. This they can do under un-der this amendment without added cost because they receive a reduced re-duced retirement payments." |
