Show Five Southern Counties May Be Declared Drought Disaster Areas A recommendation that Beaver, Iron, Kane, Carbon and Emery counties be designated drought disaster dis-aster areas was made by the Utah USDA Disaster committee Monday at a special meeting held in Salt Lake City. The committee asked Governor George D. Clyde to recommend the president designate the counties as disaster areas under provisions of Public Law 875. The recommen--dation also went to the U. S. Department De-partment of Agriculture, Chairman Chair-man S. J. Postma said. "This action is taken so assistance assist-ance may be provided livestock producers under the emergency feed program to avoid unnecessary liquidation of foundation herds of sheep and cattle," Mr. Postma said. "Drought conditions in these areas are extremely critical and the outlook for winter range is poor. Livestock men have already made substantial sales and are being encouraged en-couraged to cull their herds severely se-verely and get down to animals which are really worth carrying through," he said. "However, unless some assistance assist-ance is provided, foundation herds will be liquidated with an adverse effect on the livestock industry in the state." Assistance in purchasing supplies sup-plies of corn, barley, oats, and grain sorghums will be provided if the recommendation is approved. However, the program would give aid for purchasing feed for foundation foun-dation herds only, Mr. Postma said. No help is authorized for fattening feeder stock. |
