Show County 4-Hers Finish Annual Camp at Kents By JAN TRUMAN, Scribe The Beaver County 4-H Clubs enjoyed themselves in the Beaver Mountains at Kents Lake on the 12th, 13th and 14th of the month. Our first meeting was held at 3:30 p. m. and at this meeting Smoky the Bear talked to us on the protection pro-tection of our forests. After this meeting two members mem-bers from each club were chosen to represent their group in elections elec-tions for camp officers. Elections were won by the following: Linda Sherwood, Milford, mayor; Jill Hollingshead, Beaver, secretary; Jan Truman, Minersville, scribe. The committees were: Recreation Ha Williams, Betty Wood and Lynn Smith. Program Connie Griffiths, Kathy Killam and Rita Sue Yard-ley. Yard-ley. Campfire Arlen Marshall, Connie Con-nie Burke and Chris Marshall. Log Sawing Joe Puffer, Danny Price and Donald Naruse. Flag Raising Linda Williams, Louise Gillins and Janet Williams. After the elections we had dinner din-ner and then our campfire program. pro-gram. At the program Linda Carter Car-ter and Kathryn Seaman led us in group singing, then each club introduced in-troduced themselves with a song or a yell. The Forest Ranger from Fillmore Fill-more was present and he showed us some films and told us a hair-raising hair-raising story. The next morning some of the clubs hiked to Upper Kents for the chuckwagon breakfast at 9:30 a.m. We had the flag raising ceremony after this. Insect study was next with Dr. Knowlton. Then we had handicraft. handi-craft. That day there was really a noise around camp because we made bongo drums as our handicraft. handi-craft. In the afternoon we had recreation recrea-tion and that night at campfire each of the clubs gave a skit and we had the candle-lighting ceremony. cere-mony. We have this every year and it is very inspiring. The next morning we all got up early (at least some did) and ate breakfast and went to the flag-raising flag-raising ceremony. Then we had the log-sawing contest. This is fun but it is a lot of work. At 11 a.m. we had the awards program. First prize for the skit went to the first year group of Beaver; second to fifth year group from Milford, and third to fifth-year group from Minersville. Min-ersville. Prizes also were given for the log sawing contest, perfect attendance at all the meetings, and for the cleanest camp. Camp broke at 2 p. m. We had a wonderful time. It is hard to put down on paper all the fun we had. I'm sure a lot of the success - of the camp we owe to our county agent, Grant Esplin, and our 4-H leaders. |
