Show Kizer Blasts 'City Sales Tax'; Urges Coordinating Small Town Resistance Mayor Ray Kizer, addressing the ' Milford Lions Club Wednesday evening, eve-ning, blasted the "optional" city sales tax as "another gimmick to raise more revenue for metropoli- j tan shopping centers at the ex-1 pense of Utah's home towns." "Three years ago when the Utah Municipal League discussed tho special city sales tax I vigorously opposed it," Mayor Kizer said, "and I'm still opposed to it. It's enough of a drain on small-town economy to have our citizens traveling to larger shopping centers, spending their money where there's a greater great-er variety of merchanidse available, avail-able, without adding extra taxes to force out-of-town shoppers to help build their airports and streets, operate op-erate their police and fire departments, depart-ments, and pay for their city improvements. im-provements. "With the larger shopping centers cen-ters continually trying to dig deeper deep-er into the "B" and "C" road funds which have been the only salvation salva-tion of the small town and small county when it comes to paying for street and road construction; with the metropolitan areas considering reduction of business license as they add special sales taxes; and offering more and more inducement induce-ment to the out-of-towner, it would seem that now's the time for coordinating co-ordinating "buy at home" campaigns cam-paigns of smaller communities, and formulation of civic-pride campaigns cam-paigns to help build the shopping centers in our own home towns. "You don't hear of Salt Lake and Ogden and Provo and Cedar City I and Richfield offering any assistance assist-ance to small-town governments, but at every session of the legisla- ture, every time a group of big-town big-town businessmen get together. ! they come up with a new gimmick to entice the small-town resident to spend his money and help pay taxes in the larger cities. "Small-town governments, civic clubs and businessmen had better be coming up with a well-planned program to combat big-city inducements induce-ments offered shoppers." |
