Show Monday, September 8, 2008 HOMECOMING 2008 THE SIGN POST Chalk murals to reflect WSLTs past Homecoming activity to reflect the history of Weber State's buildings By Samantha Neri a&e editor I The Signpost Weber State University has changed over the past 50 years. New buildings have gone up, old buildings remodeled or even torn down and rebuilt. Starting Tuesday morning, students will be able to see'what has changed on campus through sidewalk drawings. Student artists, Sarah Zimmcr and Scott Jensen, will draw the pictures on the sidewalk. Two more artists may also be helping draw the pictures but their help was unconfirmed Saturday afternoon. "The theme (for homecoming) is "Then and Now' and we are incorporating that in our chalk art," said Ana Velasquez, the Weber State University Campus Activities Director. Using charcoals, the artists will draw the buildings and then add color around the buildings. The one. Buildings in the murals will include the Browning Center and the Allied Health building. "We are going to have a couple in the location where they still are but are going to have an aerial shot of what Weber State looked like from the air in 1963," Benlley said, "then right next to that in the same mural we are going to have what it looks like now from the air." The other aerial shot will be by the bookstore entrance of the Shepherd Union building. Between the Social Science building and the Miller Administration building will be a mural of a 1960s photo taken by the west side of the pond. "We are going to have a fabulous, fabulous black and white shot of the 24th of Jnlv fireworks from the pond and the fireworks are going to be in culm «iml everything else will be in Clvm o.ils," said Bentley. The murals vill be all around campus iiuluilintj the Marriot Health building, and the Browning Center, between the Social Science building and Wattis Business and between the Lind Lecture and the Science I.ab. This is the first year for the murals, but second year for the chalk art. The chalk art activity is open to all students and starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning between , the Social Science building and the Wattis Business building. "The thing i like about this activity is anyone can chalk," Velasquez said. "Some1 people complain (hat homecoming is for traditional students. No, anyone can chalk." There will be taped off squares where the students will be able to draw. "The general student body will be able to use the sidewalk chalk ' and draw," Bentley said. "We are going to have locations set up by the social science building as well as closer up to the science buildings." The chalk art ewnt and the murals are a way of advertising for the event. "This is the first time we have done the murals as a sort of advertisement for the chalk art event," Bentley said, "as well as the homecoming week as a whole."
