Out of Right field The audacity of hype quick to add, "in ways that nobody anticipated." Nobody? What about its supporters? Did they not think it was going to work? What about John McCain? John McCain has been in favor of increasing U.S. troop levels since he returned from a visit in Iraq in Barack Obama based much of his 2003. He warned the administration campaign as an opposition to the time and time again that the troops surge of troops in Iraq. He gave his in Iraq needed more support and famous quote, "I am not persuaded more supplies. Years later, when the that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq opportunity finally came to send more is going to solve the sectarian violence troops, he championed the cause, and there. In fact, I think it will do the the cause had great success-even reverse." Nowitseems he is conceding. Obama says so. After all, according At least to that statement. The to him, "it succeeded." Obama got it criticism of the surge on his website wrong, McCain got it right and Obama has been removed, and he has gone lacked the decency to give him credit. back on one of the biggest "changes" It makes one wonder what else Obama of which he so eloquently spoke. has gotten wrong. It wouldn't be the Only a few short months ago he refused first time he has made a serious error to acknowledge that the surge was in judgment when it comes to national working. Now, however, he has a different opinion. "I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that n o b o d y anticipated," he said. With that said, he staunchly d e f e n d s his original opposition to the increase of troops. Interesting that when he finally admitted some success, he was defense. While touring Europe and speaking to the people there, he left out the wounded troops. He initially planned a visit to Ramstein Air Base in Germany to visit the wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan, but when he was informed that he could not take his camera crew with him, as McCain and Hilary had done, he refused to go. When he went on his rock star tour of Europe, the crowds adored him. He promised to better America's reputation among world leaders. Isn't better, as was asked on NPR, to do what is right, than what is popular? Just because something is fashionable does in no way make it the best course of action. And since when does putting politics aside to visit the injured heroes become something that would tarnish a reputation? Hopefully America may be waking up from the audacity of hype that has seemed to charismatically take over the media in a dreamlike state. Obama, with his god-like background, and well rehearsed speech, still didn't get as many viewers as McCain did. Maybe America really is ready for something, besides a lot of talk and overexuberant applause. I hope America will pick real change we can trust. Change with a maverick style and a hero's record.
