Show Debut Wednesday, March 23, 2005 The Signpost Page 14 continued from from "What better way for students to see debating candidates than on the World Wide Web/' ~ Casey Garner, WSUSA internal relations director For more Information, of the candidates running for office online. Casey Garner just ran with it," Clifford said. Garner, a 24-yearoldaccounting major, worked with Clifford to create and design weberstuden ts.corn. "Weber State needed to move more into the technology age," Garner said. "With Weber being a commuter campus, what better way for students to see debating candidates than on the World Wide Web." The site has been an ongoing process since last fall ivhen the basic site was completed. Now, updates are regularly posted, including the election information. "We really want to keep the site fresh," Clifford said, "and the main purpose of.it is to let the students know what's happening on campus, past, present and future." ." Right now, the elections are taking center stage on the site. Students running for office were invited to share their platform electronically to the student body. The interviews are posted at weberstudents.com. The main feature is an elections 2005 interview reel, which is more than 20 minutes in length. It includes candidates listing their qualifications and plans for the upcoming year. In addition to the main movie reel, WSU students can get to know the running parties more individually. The candidates have been organized into their separate parties, and most of them have been interviewed and Mimed, the result of which can be found under their individual profiles. The individual clips were all edited into the elections 2005 reel. Along with the election information, the site includes information on the restructuring of student government at WSU, as well as submissions of work from students. "The site is interactive and is open for submission from anyone," Clifford said. "It's kind of like a community circle, where students can submit art, videos and other works to share online * with the entire campus. The site has been an ongoing process since last fall semester. We got the basic thing done, and now we are updating and increasing the content of the site." The videos of the candidates were shot on Thursday and Friday of last week and made available to students last Monday. They will be available throughout the entire election process. "The candidates were very supportive of this new feature," Garner said. "It gives students a great opportunity to learn about who they will vote for before the election." on 1-800-826-9662 You can reach reporter Blair Dee Elections signs have begun to adorn campus as primary elections kick off this week. Candidate interviews have been posted online for students to watch. <v State University SIFE presents: Money Matters Today's Tips; Paying off your Mortgage Here are some ways to pay off your mortgage sooner. • Make bi-monthly payments. One more payment per year will take 8.4 years off the life of your mortgage. . •Consider a 15-year mortgage. Monthly payments will be higher, but you will save on interest payments. • Refinancing. If your current mortgage rate is 1-2 percent higher than the going rate, refinancing can save you thousands over the life of your mortgage. • Try an ARM. An Adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) is a good option if you think you may live in your home only for a few years. ARMs are set at a lower interest rate and are capped at a 2 percent increase per year and a maximum of 5 or 6 percent during the life of the loan. • Open a separate account. Put any excess money in a separate account and let it build. Pay your mortgage down in one lump sum. This can be as effective as paying the excess money directly to your mortgage payment. This also allows you flexibility and control.
