It isn't easy, but in all honesty I feel lucky. Rey isn't out killing people; he isn't being shot at. I hear from him at least once a day, and we are both dedicated to this mission that has been deemed a marriage by the law. I have a healthy son who rarely gets sick. I am all-in-all blessed! I am a full-time student here at Weber State University and am starting my own business in addition to being a full-time mother and wife. He has been called to go to Iraq this fall. "I am ready to go over there, but when I go it will affect me because I will be unable to attend school so I will get behind," Scheifl said. Lindsay Giardini, WSU junior, said that the war has affected her because her boyfriend is in Iraq and has to be on duty for five months. Giardini has mixed feelings about the war. "I think it is great that we can help the people out because they want it so bad, but at the same time I think that it could be done in other ways," Giardini said. Scheifl disagrees. "I think that once it is over, everyone will see what we did was right," Scheifl said. The war has changed America in some ways. Engstrom thinks that America has become a more unified country since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11,2001. "It has let us become more aware about the world and how things can change for the worse in an instant," Engstrom said. busy that most of the time I don't think about where Rey is and what could happen. It's at those times when I need my husband home, I need him to help with our son, to help with the business or around the house, I need him to just hold me and tell me I can do it. This morning I really need him to run to Smith's and grab a thermometer and some children's Tylenol. "I think it's a great idea for them to offer something like that," Miller said. "It lets people see if the Army is really for them without having to sign up." The WSU ROTC Web site says: "Whatever you decide, the experience you'll have in the Army ROTC will give you the confidence you need to be a success in college and beyond. Whether you choose to pursue a career in the Army or the corporate world, Army ROTC is 'the smartest college course you can take.'" WSU student Matthew Teter is in ROTC and is a member in the Army National Guard. While at work washing cars, Teter heard about the Iraq war on the radio. Eighteen- and 19-year-old kids were fighting for their country, and he was washing cars. "ft really opened my eyes and made me want to do something more, so 1 enlisted in the Army," Teter said. When Teter first heard about 9/11, he was shocked that something like that could happen and started to think about what the nation was going to have to do. He wasn't in the service at the time. ROTC members are not deployable until after they graduate, but Teter has a number of friends out of the country with the Army right now. "You do what you're called to do," Teter said. "If I was older I'd be over there, but whether it's a just cause, 1 don't know." ROTC also offers scholarships offered on merit rather than financial need. ROTC could add to any resume, and can help students determine whether they should join the Army. You can leave a message for reporter Sydney Howell by calling 626-7621.
