It requites a great deal of work and a lot of concentration.Now that the football program has been saved, the coaches and players can concentrate on just playing football rather than playing salesmen."All the coaches and the players on getting in to just playing football," assistant coach Mark Gorscak said. The football team is excited to start what they refer to as the "New Era," Gorscak said. "The New Era will carry on the success and build on that momentum we had last year," he said. Carrying on old traditions, such as giving back to the community, is also an important concentration the football team will be continuing."We will continue our community service project in the elementary schools," Gorscak said. They are looking forward to next year with five new dancers. By Jena Voris Signpost staff writer The Pro-Motion Dancers at Weber State University start off a new year promoting a "positive, professional and progressive" attitude.Soon after this year's tryouts, the 16 dancers dove into community service by helping out with a car wash for the Special Olympics.After a successful first year, the Pro-Motion Dancers will take June and July off, except to perform at the Stadium of Fire show on July 1 at Brigham Young University. The show will feature Barbara Mandrell, the Utah Symphony, team's 'new era' will begin next year e - -? ! . i : WSU's football team, now gets children in reading and geography ha ve been very successful and have given the football team more exposure. "Everyone becomesa fan when they are a kid," Gorscak said. The WSU football team has already begun its off-season training.The team just ended a three-week practice session and will resume a 1 0-week conditioning pro Disney characters and a special surprise guest. On August 24-26, the dancers will fly to San Francisco to do the San Francisco 49ers halftime show. "You can't get any higher than that the NFL and the 49ers," Julie Webb, Director ofPro-Motion, said. While in San Francisco, the dancers are bringing a choreographer from Los Angeles to have their own workshop for the team. "We are all really excited about that," Mindy Rose, a Pro-Motion dancer, said. Practice will start again in September for two and a half hours a day, three days a week. Practices consist of body conditioning and ; it.- ill ! : " it- , i to concentrate on playing ball, gram at the end of May. In August, the team will start training camp. For senior quarterback Bryan Martin, a typical day of practice would involve a meeting at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., the players view practice films from the day before. By 3 p.m. they are suited up and on the field for practice until 5:30 or 6 p.m. Twice a week after practice the regular class work, which will earn the dancers three credit hours. Webb is also planning workshops for the team on personal power, nutrition and body conditioning."These workshops better you as a whole person, not just a dancer," Webb said. She is also stressing "energy, enthusiasm and excellence." Pro-Motion will perform during halftime shows at the WSU football games. They will also be performing halftime shows for the Utah Jazz when they play at the Dee Events Center. The team has tried to establish a really positive and professional image for WSU. The team is working hard and is determined to have as successful a season as possible. "We want to win the Big Sky championship, make a run in the playoffs and make a run for national championship," Martin said. Last season the team was relatively young. The Pro-Motion Dancers have earned a nomination for"BestStu-dent Organization" for Crystal Crest, based onbringing spirit and positive recognition to WSU. The team has taken the experiences to develop and grow strong to make these goals realistic, Martin said. Being a member of the foot-ball team not only builds physical strength, it builds academic stamina. Players are rewarded for their outstanding achievements in academics, which plays into the arena of competition."This adds an extra incentive to do well," Martin said. WSU athletics places a great emphasis on education. Players who do not maintain the required GPA must attend study hall in the library after practice. "Football teaches so much more than just X's and O's. There are things that transfer over to the classroom the discipline, hard work, getting things done when they are supposed to be done and just being prepared," Martin said. "You use the same principles in the classroom." Gorscak said that there will also be new strengths added to the team. The new talents have added to the depth of the offensive and defensive lines. With the new athletic director and new focus, the team is in a "win-win situation," Gorscak said. "We are excited about the new athletic department and the season." organization has really come a long way. She said she is impressed with the incredible amount of talent in Pro-Motion. "We started from scratch and have been doing a great job," Rose said.
