Show H New student services building looking good By Laura Webb -,-.5 ' Signpost signoff editor During the rush at the beginning of fall quarter, students have to run all over campus to get organized for the new school year. That rush will be avoided this year by consolidating student services into a new building on campus constructed specifically for that purpose. Grant Protzman, assistant to the vice president for student services, said the new student services building is expected to open right before school starts in fall quarter. "However, there might be delays due to final acceptance.""We may have to move the timeline back; the first goal is to make sure everything is done properly," Protzman said. Keeping the students in mind and being able to accommodate future changes have been the priorities of the student services building committee. "The students are the most important factor; we are trying to make their student service needs a pleasant experience," Protzman said. Student services, the architect and construction crews have pulled together to make things easier for students. For instance, computers are scattered around the building for students to take an active part in registration. "Students can register on these computers, check to see if classes are open, or use the touch tone systems at home," Protzman said. The student health center, counseling center and the center for the physically challenged have been especially designed to accommodate students' needs. Not only are their educational needs kept in mind but also their physical needs, Protzman said. The health center is a well-designed doctor's office, with a privatebathroom in each examination room and an X-ray lab. The counseling center has been designed to work especially TT.,T I,J.. Rooms have been designed to accommodate relaxation sessions, group sessions and individual counseling. There has been a lot of organization and effort to prepare a center for the physically challenged that will provide students convenience and fulfill their personal needs. "Students are going to be impressed," Protzman said. Work trends for the future will be moving toward small work groups instead of one-on-one, Protzman said. Each office area has group rooms that can accommodate future setup of electronic advances. The areas can also be easily changed into office spaces. "Even closets are wired and, if needed, could be utilized for office space," Protzman said. The adrninistrative decision to remove the drop-off day care center from the original plan of the student services building and replace it with the cashier depart ment has proven that the building plan is flexible. "We were told of the decision after the cement was poured," Protzman said. The building plan passed the test and student ser vices were able to make the change at a considerably lower cost. So far, student services has kept under budget.
