Show A o Lagoon amuses patrons with 'Skycoaster' ride A ?, . -' - A to." - - i' r Excuse me while I kiss the sky "Skycoaster," a new ride attraction at Lagoon, offers all the thrills and excitement of skydiving and hang gliding rolled into one. 'Braveheart' By Scott Pehrson Signpost staff writer One of the latest movie releases, "Braveheart," starring Mel Gibson, is an incredible story about courage, loyalty, betrayal, honor and the brutality of war. Heroic battles, powerful love, and the passion of one man's strength which inspires a whole country against its aggressors, are pulled together in a great combination.Each turn of the movie has a surprise and keeps you guessing what will happen next. The story takes place in the late 13th Century where the legendary Scottish knight Sir William Wallace (Gibson) returns to Scotland after being away for many years. Wallace's courage and passion unite his people and drive him to fight for Scotland's freedom. The scenery in the film is incredible, as well as the authentic clothing and the setting, which takes place in the vicinity of Medieval castles. However, the war scenes are absolutely brutal and it takes a 7 s'-nT4:i , . '):: . - - if strong stomach to sit through them. Despite the gore, the spirit that Wallace creates cannot be broken. His life communicates to others thatthey toocanprevail if they are faithful to what they believe. The film is nearly three hours long, but it takes that much time to tell the story completely. One drawback is that there are many characters, which at some points, makes the movie hard to follow. However, there is subtle humor throughout the film which lightens the darkness of the many savage battles. I would not recommend this movie to someone who can't stand the sight of blood.The wars are ruthless and gruesome. This is an entertaining movie based on history. The scenery is majestic and the acting is superb, but be prepared for a long night. If you don't know much about hiking but would like to learn, sign up for PE 129, a hiking class taught during autumn and spring quarters at WeberState University by professor Gary D. Willden. "The class hikes between seven and eight different trails during the quarter," Willden said. "Most of the trails in the area go up the canyons. The class divides into groups and each group picks a trail and is responsible for putting to By Mindy Rose Signpost staff writer Dare devils will be thrilled after flying Lagoon's newest attraction, the "Skycoaster." The Skycoaster creates the motions of simultaneously hang gliding, bungee jumping, parachuting and sky diving in one fall. "It was pretty freaky because you really don't have time to react," Skycoaster rider Brian Nicholson said. "It was definitely a rush." Nicholson rode the Skycoaster three times in order to capture the experience on film. The attraction involves a 150-foot drop from a 173-foot steel arc. Flyers are attached to a full body harness that is attached to two steel cables. After being towed to the 10-story launch tower, flyers pull their own ripcords and swoop down through a 300-foot arc. At approximately 70 miles per hour, the pendulum motion lasts for about 1 12 minutes. Lagoon's first encounter with the attraction was at the Kennywood amusement park in Pennsylvania. "When we saw how exciting and successful it was, we contracted to purchase our own," said Lagoon's Marketing Assistant Peter O'Bagy. The arc has passed local, state, national and international safety regulations. The price for one jump from the Skycoaster is $25. This is not included in the price of any Lagoon pass because it is considered an attraction, not a ride. Because of it's limited capacity, the Skycoaster is only able to serve approximately 800 people per day. gether a trail guide for that hike."
