Show 'Athenian' entertains with dancers By Michelle L. Crook Signpost staff writer Art, culture and food await customers Thursday nights at the Athenian Souvlaki Authentic Greek Restaurant in Ogden. Belly dancers take the stage at the "Athenian" to entertain patrons while they eat dinner or enjoy Greek pastry desserts. The "Athenian" has been open for the past three years, with belly dancers entertaining for the past two and a half years. John Daskalos, manager of the Athenian, said the dancers were encorporated to pick up business and to give patrons a form of entertainment that fits the style of food. Mashara Ribia, a Middle Eastern dance teacher in Ogden, said belly dancing plays a large part in the ancient Greek culture. "Greeks have always had belly dancing in their culture," Ribia said. "They usually have three to five parts to their dances." She said people should see the belly dancers because so many people do not know what they do. "People would be very surprised to see what it is all about," Ribia said. Belly dancer September Rea Erickson, who danced last Thursday, has been dancing for more than a year. She said she takes her belly dancing lessons in Salt Lake City from a lady named Zahirah. "I started belly dancing after watching Zahirah dance," Erickson said. "She is so good." Daskalos said they have a different belly dancer perform each Thursday evening at the restaurant. He said patrons seem to really enjoy the entertainment. "It is pretty popular," he said. "We get a wide variety of people in here." The belly dancers use different Reduce Reuse Recycle 7 recycle I ParticiDatel A 1 cipatel A ) 1J Don't trash The Signpost! rim mn. jp . T- ' " . ! "In the hiking class we only take trails that you can complete in three hours," he said. "There are a lot of great hikes to take which are right off campus." Willden suggests that hikers always be prepared for emergencies."It is a good idea to take water, food, a jacket, matches, etc. You may plan on hiking for just two or three hours, but if you have an emergency or get stuck somewhere overnight, it is nice to have something to eat and a way to keep warm," Willden said. He also suggests taking some extra supplies just incase it becomes necessary to make do with what you have by living off the land." When going on longer hikes you should take a filtration system or iodine tablets to properly treat water for drinking," he said. However, Willden suggests I IslUlslurotlJtohrilfoa fT'' SAVE MONEY... "If you are going to carry a compass, make sure you know how to properly use it," Willden said. If a hiker doesn't have this knowledge, the compass will be of no use. Willden also believes that every hiker should carry a map of the area. "Having a map with you on any hike is always a good idea," he said. Wilden said food taken on a hike should be a fairly complete snack or meal which can be eaten easily. GORP, also known as "Good Old Raisins and Peanuts," is a basic combination of foods which can be mixed and stored together. This is a food which meets the many needs of hikers and is easy to put together and carry. In a handout Willden put together, "Goodie GORP" and "Granola GORP," are discussed. Granola GORP is a favorite of natural food lovers and usually includes nuts, berries, seeds and even jerky and vegtables; all of which are mixed together in small dried pieces. Goodie GORP is a favorite of junk food junkies. This mixture can include M & M's candies, peanuts, chocolate-covered raisins, jelly beans, licorice nibs or any other item you want to add. bcaua paat....
