May 2l, 1W1 15 VVSi's frenulum quarterback Westervelt has bright future at Wildcatville By Rob Trebilcock Staff wdtoi of Tho Stgopost The succoss of an athletic team depends on everyone in the organization. Many times wo use the cliche, "You're only as strong as your weakest link." Put on the Weber State University Knit ball team, Rob Westervelt is determined not to bo that weak link. Westervelt, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound rvd-shirt freshmen quarterback from Newhall, California, came to Weber on a football scholarship. After being recruited by many of the Tac 10 and Dig Eight teams, Westervelt decided to come to Weber. During his high school career, Westervelt received numerous awards as a quarterback for WM. S. 1 iart High in California. As a junior Westervelt started for the varsity team and received such honors as San Fernando Valley Chapter Quarterback of the Year and was on the Street ic Smiths top 24 high school player roster. As a senior Westervelt was league outstanding back and was a first team all-league player. Westervelt was also only the second quarterback in the history of his high school to be named all C.I.F (California International Federation) two years in a row. The two years Westervelt played high schixl football he passed for over 43,000 yards and 43 touchdowns. Coming to Weber, Westervelt had a lot to learn about being a college Quarterback. "In high school I would just drop back and throw the ball," said Westervelt. "In high school 1 didn't know anything about reading defenses, except for two coverages." Now Westervelt says he is able to read defenses, pick up blites, and make an audible when one is needed. Westervelt credits a lot of his success to Jamie Martin (Weber's starting quarterback) who has really helped him out. "Jamie has been great, ho really has taught mea lot," said Westervelt. Along with Martin, Westervelt sayscoacru-s Rich F.ricson and head coach Dave Arslanian have also helped him out a great deal. Assistant quarterback coach Rich Fric-son had high praise for Westervelt, "Rob has shown a great deal of improvement and is preparing himself to play for us and help us win. He is a great competitor and has shown great leadership and is playing with a lot of confidence." Westervelt enjoys playing at Weber tx-cause, "I like the offense; it's a passing offense with a lot of different formations similar to the pro's. With our offense, it varies a lot so we can do a lot with it. It's pretty potent," says Westervelt. This past spring Westervelt got his first taste of spring football. "Spring ball really helped me out a lot, I got a lot more playing time and I feel more comfortable with the offense now," said Westervelt. The difference between fall and spring (football) arc like night and day to Westervelt. "In the fall I didn't know what 1 was doing and in the spring I did." Westervelt feels he has good arm strength and good sie but feels he needs to work on his fixtwork and fundamentals. Another part of his game Westervelt would like to improve is his consistency which he knows will get tx-tter with time andexperience. x9 ' w RED-SHIRT FRESHMAN Rob Westervelt Impressed many this spring and will be a welcome addition to Weber'j history of good quarterbackj.
