Show THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, May 29, 1991 4 Fdl Where've you been? By Necia Palmer Editor-in-chief of The Signpost It's incredible, Weber's faculty, staff and student body have responded in the last two issues of The Signpost to more issues than any certain issue of the paper in the past year. Where have your comments been all year! I used to think that the lack of editorial comment from this campus was due to the lack of time - but this last outpouring of opinion proves me wrong. It's time for finals and the warm beckoning of the sun certainly entertain many minds with thoughts other than sharing one's opinions with the commu Professor boycotts prayer To the editor It seems that once again the ad-minstration is planning to allow a prayer a the WSU graduation ceremonies. Since the only practical purpose of this is to divide the audience into believers and unbelievers, the primary graduation ceremony is not appropriate for all Pres thanks library helpers Dear Editor, Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank publicly several people and organizations who have helped make this the most successful fundraiser that has ever been coordinated by students at Weber State. The WSU Cheerleaders have been great promoters and supporters of the fundraiser and have been responsible for large donations; the WSU library staff has been supportive and have held several fundraisers on their own; LDSSAand the LDS Institute have supported all fundraising activities and made a significant contribution as well. Several other organizations who have donated to the fund and participated in the fundraising efforts include: Residence Halls Association, Lambda Delta Sigma, Psi Gamma Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Gamma Chi, LaDianaeda, Otyokwa, Professional Accounting Society, KWCR, WSU Honors and the WSU Bookstore. It's interesting, educational and shows that we actually care about our community at Weber State. The Signpost's ceased publication until it's summer publication begins June 18 under the direction of new Editor- in-chief, Jim Sawdey. He moves into that position from the photo editor7 s position. Let him know your opinions, there'll be plenty of room for them. On behalf of the staff and myself, thanks for an excellent year. members of the WSU community. Accordingly, I urge all faculty and staff who are opposed to this curious local custom to boycott the main proceedings and attend only those ceremonies at which sectarian prayers have been banned. Harold M.Elliott WSU professor Several other people have committed much time and energy to helping the campaign function . Among those are: Tina and Camilla Lindahl, Cindy Wilson, Len Dejesus, Nikki Brant, Christa Graham, Nancy Coleman, Shane Stewart, Melinda Roylance and Jeni Critchlow. Special thanks goes to everyone in the WSU Development Office for patience in handling the donations and to Robb Alexander, Don Spainhower, Dean Hurst and President Thompson for their advice and assistance in carrying out the fundraiser. Finally, I appreciate the support we have received from the studentbody in general by way of donations and support. To this point we have recieved $90,000 for our library, but, more importantly, the positive results bode well for increased future funding from the State. Thank you all again for your wonderful support. Douglas Peterson President, ASWSU Profs cold shoulder new theory To the editor: On Thurs., Apr. 25, a new theory of the interior of the earth, sun, and planets was presented at Weber State by Mr. Neil Christian-son, titled "Earth has a cold heart." We would like to make a few comments about this theory for the benefit of the of the Weber State community, and in the spirit of his invitation to examine and comment on his theory. This "cold core" theory suffers from a number of major deficiencies. For example, Mr. Christianson postulates that energy flows from a cold core to hotter outer layers of the earth. Without even considering a mechanism, this idea should be seen as violating basic principles of thermodynamics, since the spontaneous flow of heat is never from colder to hotter regions. In fact, when any body has regions of different temperature, heat flows from the hotter regions to the colder, as it approaches a uniform temperature. As a second example, the sun (See COLD page 11) WSU scraos iQ .oni inrj i w -s System1 To the editor For 363 days out of every year my musical diet consists of Top 40 tripe and Modem mush, I listen to this in a vain attempt to maintain my youth, but I look forward, twice a year, to the opportunity of listening to something a little different, something I will realy enjoy. I'm speaking of course about the Jazz Ensemble and the Sound System. I was, therefore, shocked and disheartened to learn last Wednesday night in the midst of a lively concert that it was to be the Sound System's last. They are being disbanded due to a lack of funding. I like the Jazz Ensemble a lot, but it's the Sound System that I really go to see. Perhaps that is what was on the minds of the half dozen or so people who got up and walked out of the performance after the an-(Sce SYSTEM page 11) Letter to editor policy The Signpost welcomes letters to the editor.
