Daly has considerable support among the selectors, particularly the eight with ties to the National Basketball Association. The target date for selection of a coach is March 1. SIX ELECTED TO HALL OF FAME: : : Indiana coach Bob Knight and the late NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien were among six elected for induction Thursday to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Also elected were guard Tiny Archibald, centers Dave Co wens and Harry Gallatin and the late Larry Fleisher, who founded the NBA Players Association. The group will be inducted May 13. VANCOUVER TOPS PHILADELPHIA: Troy Gamble turned away 36 shots as Vancouver beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1, giving the Canucks only their third victory in 20 games. The loss was the Flyers' third in a row. The Canucks are 3-15-2 in their last 20 games. In other NHL games: Calgary 4, Boston 1 ; Montreal 5, Quebec 1 ; Minnesota 4, Toronto 2. Also, Mary Joe Fernandez, who would not have been in the field except for an injury to Monica Seles, beat Jennifer Capriati 6-0, 6-2 to win the championship and $268,000, a record for women, in the Big Bear Challenge tennis exhibition at Columbus, Ohio. UNLV HAS TILL MAY 1: Nevada-Las Vegas has until May 1 to respond to an NCAA letter of inquiry alleging 29 violations in the basketball program. UNLV was granted an extension to respond to the 43-page letter it received Dec. 19. GREENWELL, LARKIN SIGN: Boston's Mike Green well (4 years, $12.25 million) and Tom Brunansky (2 years, $5.55 million) agreed to contracts Thursday. Also, Cincinnati's Barry Larkin and California's Kirk McCaskill, signed $2.1 million deals each for 1991 . The St. Louis Cardinals signed relief pitcher Todd Worrell and right-hander Bob Tewksbury to one-year contracts. YANKEES FIRE BRADLEY: George Bradley was relieved of duties as New York Yankees vice president of baseball operations. In a statement issued by the Yankees, Bradley and the club "mutually agreed to end their working relationship, effective immediately." With Bradley's firing, general manager Gene Michael assumes control of the team. RICE NAMED PLAYER OF YEAR: San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice was named NFL player of the year by The Sporting News. Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Richmond Webb was chosen rookie of the year. Also, former Detroit Lions defensive lineman Reggie Rogers, 26, was released from prison after serving a year for the traffic deaths of three teen-agers in 1988. . They lost 75-69. Weber State played well the first half and were ahead by two points going into the locker room, 32-30. At the onset of the second half, Weber pushed their lead to six. Then Montana, presently No. 1 in the Big Sky, took over and out scored the Lady 'Cats 45-27 in the second half. Four players for Montana scored in double figures, Shannon Cate had 17 points, Julie Epperly 15, Trish Olson 13 and Marti Kinzlerll. Weber had three players with the hot hand. Melanie Knott put in 16 points, while Jill Sperry had 13. Weber's upcoming games will be Friday at Idaho State and Saturday in the Dee Events Center against Boise State at 7:30. The loss puts the Lady Cats at 8-3 in the Big Sky and 11-10 overall going in to Sundays game against Montana State.
