It is the month set aside to be proud of black culture and a time to make themselves more aware of their own history. "Black History Month was started to celebrate African-American's contributions to world as well as to United States history," said Melvin Gillespie, coordinator of WSU's Multicultural Center. "Many people are naive and uninformed aboutAfrican-Americans and other minorities in history."Most people know about the contributions made by famous Black Americans such as Harriet Tubman, the conductor of the Underground Railroad which helped thousands of slaves escape to freedom. Most also know of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the most active and visible civil rights leader in the 1960s "the non-violent crusader" as he was sometimes called. However, names and contributions of other Black Americans most often go unnoticed. For example, few people know that Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was the first successful heart surgeon in America in 1893. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Sr., was the first black general in the United States Army. Gwendolyn Brooks, one of America's leading poets, won the Pulitzer Prize for her volume of poems titled, "Annie Allen." Black History Month was started many years ago by Carter Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of Negro (now African-American) History. The purpose of this organization was to give recognition to Black people and Black history which was left out of textbooks. "I love to take part in celebrating my past as anAfrican-American. Our culture is so rich and I'm proud to share it with others who may not know much about it," a WSU student said. The activities celebrating Black History Month, all over the the nation and specifically here in Utah, will be to inform people and also to entertain. For those people who are interested in attending any activities. Black Scholars United, an organization on campus, will be sponsoring several events throughout February. Help available for victims of family violence, speaker says By Sharon Cottle Staff writer of The Signpost Violence in the home is becoming a major social issue, and there is help to break the chain of violence that in some families passes from one generation to another. The responsibility lies with the abusers and the victims to seek help, Laura Roe, Women's Crisis Center Coordinator, said at the Women's Educational Resource "Brown Bagger" Wednesday. "The social cost is too high. We cannot allow violence within the family to be a family affair," Roe said. There is a pattern in family abuse, sometimes extending back "We cannot allow violence within the family to be a family affair' Laura Roe, Women's Crisis Center coordinator generations, that shows up in the backgrounds of abusers and victims of family violence. Most abusers have been victimized either sexually or physically when they were children, Roe said. "Violence is a learned response," Roe said. "Children who remain in the home learn battering, as it is called." The victim also may have been abused or have witnessed abuse in childhood. Self-esteem is at issue and the victim feels trapped in a situation which seems hopeless. "She loses her sense of identity and self worth," Roe said. "There is a tendency for some women to believe what they hear." Spouse abusers do not accept responsibility for their actions. They blame and degrade the victim with physical and verbal insults. The response can be unlearned and behavior can be changed. Roe showed the film "A Family Affair" which told the story of a woman abused by her husband (See VIOLENCE page 6) Nowyoucan afford to dream in color.
