Speakes held the position under President Ronald Reagan froml981-1987. His best-selling autobiography, "Speaking Out" was published in 1988. He is currently on a lecture tour discussing the issues of the media and politics. Speakes was selected as a Convocation guest as part of WSC Greek Week activities. In 1982 Speakes was named "Man of the Year" for the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Convocation Chair, Doug Peterson believes Speakes' experiences during President Reagan's administration could be educational for everyone. "His insight and experiences during the Reagan administration along with his view on current issues should be very interesting," said Peterson. Weber State Communication Chair, Dr. Randolph Scott believes that Speakes' role as chief spokesman for a president is more damage control than information giving. "Politicians often misspeak or are misinterpreted by an audience," said Scott. "Speakes worked mainly on negative feedback with the duty of limiting the damage and restoration of the presidents credibility." To be a media relations person, one must understand human communication, advises Scott. "To be in a position similar to Speakes', you must understand not only communication but also the political process," said Scott. President Reagan awarded Speakes a Presidential Citizens Medal citing Speakes as "... a man whom the American people could always count on to tell them the truth. America is more knowledgeable because of Larry Speakes." It is the duty of a spokesperson to clarify what was meant by the speaker. Experience and training for the position should include journalism and debate. According to Scott, these areas help develop accuracy, reasoning skills and working under pressure. H ear Ye.
