Jane Van Valkenburg of the department of radiology said they will finally have enough classroom and laboratory space. "We will also have a steady power supply that does not fluctuate, so students can have more accurate radiographs," said Valkenburg. "It will give us the room we need." There are two radiology labs in Building 3. The additions will eliminate the problem of booking class time with lab time. Kathleen Lukken, director of gerontology have already been accepted to graduate schools, ranking the department one of WSC's highest in placing graduate students. The department's success can be credited to "faculty support and competition among fellow students," said Dr. Raymond Clarke, chair of the department of social work and gerontology. Clarke said WSC students are well prepared and their performance in graduate school is outstanding. "One of our main objectives is to prepare them (the students) for, graduate school," said Clarke. The department has not escaped its share of growing pains. The number of social work majors has increased from u W7 dental hygiene, said the present labs are in rooms not designed for convenience and the new facility will do more than just provide more space. "It will give us a place that is designed as a dental facility. It will have special labs that will look like dental offices," Lukken said. "It takes students five times longer to do a procedure because they are having to go to other rooms to get needed equipment." Lukken said the dental clinic on campus is a program to be proud of, and it should be a show place. People come from Brigham City, Ogden and Salt Lake to get their teeth cleaned here. Money approved for the remodeling of buildings 1,2,3, and 4 has been diverted for the new half of graduates approximately 52 students in 1985 to nearly 200 in 1989 without any additions to the faculty. "Our growth has reached a point that, unless we add to our existing faculty, we will have to put a cap on individual enrollment," said Clarke. "Regulated enrollment could begin as early as next year." Clarke said that one of the reasons for rapid growth in the The Signpost -Editorial Advertising Production Spring Quarter, 1990 The Signpost is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during fall, winter and spring quarters, and weekly during the summer quarter by the WSC Department of Communication. "It really doesn't make sense to remodel a building when you're going to turn around and tear it down," Folsom said. "We really don't have any special plans as to when this will be done. Ifll happen when the funda are there to build the new buildings." 1 Folsom said the final approval of the plans for the new addition to the Marriott Building will rest with the State Planning Board, but he estimates the project to start in late summer or fall.
