The recommendations were made yesterday by the District Seven Golf Advisory Committee. Other District Seven teams invited include seventh-ranked Texas-El Paso, New Mexico and Nevada-Reno.In the past, those advisory committees advanced teams all the way to the NCAA Championship. But last August the NCAA Council voted to allow teams to tee it up in the regional qualifiers to determine the national championship field. The majority of collegiate golf coaches hailed the decision because it now assures the strongest field possible, rather than merely geographic representation. "It's certainly an advantage to us this season to have such a qualifier," said WSC coach Mac Madsen, "In the past, only three teams from our district received bids and this year, we probably would have been on the borderline. This type of tournament will really give the NCAA tournament an elite and strong field." Madsen said 10 teams from District Eight are in the regional and that the top nine teams advance to the national championships, June 5-9 at the Oaktree Country Club in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Teams from District Eight include second-raked Arizona State, eighth-ranked Arizona, ninth-ranked Fresno State, along with traditional powers Southern California, UCLA and Washington. Nevada-Las Vegas, San Jose State, Oregon and Stanford round out the field. According to Madsen, the Wildcats will be seeded 14th or 15th in the 16-team field and will have to play extremely well in the 54-hole, no cut event, in order to make the top nine. Weber State ended the regular season with seven top-ten finishes in the nine tournaments they played this year. Madsen sends a lineup to El Paso that includes seniors Carito ViHaroman, Chuck Eble and Beau Yokomoto. Jeff Showalter, a junior college transfer this spring, and either junior Ed Baker or freshman Eric Peterson will round out the Wildcats' lineup. n ID ants- Dining Service Department of Campus Life MEDIUM COFFEE & CAKE DONUT wcoupon Snack Valid through May 31, 19S9J |
