Sh e admits that she will often make the final five, for reasons of affirmative action, yet the job always goes to the man despite her numerous honors and awards iu conducting. So what do women do about the situation? They cope with it by being the best they can be. The world right now is looking at the possibility. So be competent, knowing what you're doing is good, and do your job. Most of all, remember that women have to be twice as good as men to be considered half as : good. "So dedicate yourself. Be twice as good. Be excellent. Make yourself visible. Have a lot of self confidence in your abilities,'' advises Dr. Schatz. As for Dr. Schatz, she follows these same guidelines and keeps dreaming. Her goal is to be a professional conductor in a major orchestra and she's keeping her eyes on that goal. "Life is like a wind-up doll. I just keep hitting and backing up, and hitting those same old walls. But, eventually an opening will appear." Betz (cont'd from page 7) digital recording, jazz rock the latest rhythms, high tech harmonies and instruments. Betz has been asked to give a convocation to the Weber State College Music Dept. on May 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the Coral Room. Betz began studying music with Dr. Wooden and Clair West at Weber State College in 1969. He later studied at the University of The Pacific. After leaving the academic environment, he spent several years touring with a variety of night club, acts and rock bands, recording and performing many of his own songs throughout the U.S. and Canada. Betz feels that he neither ties himself to classical or modern, fantasy or reality. "Actually, when I use representations of natural instruments, such as a digital piano or sampled drums, it is much less realistic than when I set the oscillator of an analog synthesizer to the variable pulse wave, which represents nothing other than what it is... a great sound." "Symphony" crosses the line between fantasy and reality in many different directions at the same time. It is a very visual work, inspiring the listener to conjure up an array of images...creating in essence its own "Fantasia-like" movie, using this music as its soundtrack. "Symphony For An Imaginary Orchestra" is a tribute to Betz's musical mentors, including Bach, Mozart, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Emerson. The public is invited to attend. mm mm &mm CLOSING SOCIAL For Camp Superkids Utah's summer camp for kids with asthma Saturday, May 20 8 p.m., Union Building Ballroom $4 wout card $3 wcard $2 w Greek ID Rootbeer Floats 750 Baskin Robbins Icecream mm mm mms |
