Show Signpost Tuesday, May 1, 1984 3 Jane Jackson named queen Miss Indian WSC Crowned During Pow- Wow Celebration by Stephanie DeGraw Staff Reporter After a week-long competition during Indian Awareness Week, the new Miss Indian Weber State College was crowned at last Saturday evening's annual Pow- Wow. Jane Jackson, a twenty-year-old Navaho junior from Shiprock, New Mexico, was crowned and will take on the duties of queen for a full year. Jackson is majoring in Pre-Med and she plans to attend medical school at UCLA or Boston. Jackson's deep love and appreciation for her heritage is reflected in the pride of her voice as she explained future career plans. "I will be an obstetrician and a gynecologist so I can return to the reservation and help my people. Too many docotors there do not stay very long and they don't really care about their patients." Combining her understanding of past traditions with a keen awareness of the present, Jackson ex- U', V is Signpost photoBob George An Indian student is shown here working on a loom in the Union Building. Indians need to understand the cultural contrasts and still adapt to white society. If Indians or anyone gains an education, they should not look down on those who could not get one." Helping Indians on campus retain their cultural identity is their own club and office in the Union Building. "It's a place where Indians can hang around with their people and just be themselves," said Jackson. The club is a chartered organization and is non-profit. "The reason I came back to Weber State after trying another university in New Mexico," said Jackson, "was that I was just another number down there. Here you can always approach your professors with a question." Being crowned Miss Indian Weber State came as quite a surprise to Jackson. This was her first year in the pageant and her attendants have both been former queens. First Attendant is Cordila (Cordy) Able, a senior majoring in pyschology, and the Second Attendant is Maxine Toney, a sophomore majoring in business. "Being queen still hasn't sunk in yet," Jackson said. "In fact I didn't even tell my family I was running until after it was all over. I should have told them sooner; they would have come up. They are very supportive." Jackson has nine brothers and sisters. Jackson feels her winning asset during the pageant was her talents. She performed sign language to the traditional Indian song "Go My Son" and then created a skit and dance routine around the current hit "Girls Just Want to have Fun." Throughout the coming year Jackson will stress to Indians the motto "Don't forget your people." And to everyone, "Use education as a tool and know who you are and where you're going. Discover....
