If last Friday's intra-squad scrimmage is any indication of how hard the 'Cats can hit, the Alumni will be in for a long evening. The defense really took charge during last Friday's scrimmage, in which it totally dominatid the offense. The offense was in control the first three scrimmages of the spring, but the defense finally got it together and put the clamps on the offense. Defensive Coordinater Mike Zimmer was very pleased with the play of his defense last Friday. Zimmer said, "We still have a lot of learning to do on defense. We haven't done everything we are capable of doing yet. We moved well on defense and were very aggressive, but we were still making too many mistakes." Zimmer continued, "Our defensive linemen are all newcomers. Our defense lost four players to the pros last year, but I feel overall we can be a better defensive team. We are very young and it will take time, but I think this defensive team will be very good." Zimmer has been very impressed with the play of the defensive backs and feels they could be one of Weber's strong points. The linebackers have been looking strong also. The alumni can expect some hard hitting by the defense in this Saturday's game. Even though the offense struggled on Friday, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski feels Weber will have another good offensive team. Bratkowski said he wasn't pleased with the offense Friday but gave the defense most of the credit. The offense has been dominating the scrimmages so far, so Bratkowski wasn't too concerned with Friday's poor performances."Our offense will be every bit as good as last year's offense was," Bratkowski said. "We will be able to run the ball better and that will help our passing game be that much better. We have three good quarterbacks who are battling for a starting berth. Like the defense, our offense will be young, but we will be more aggressive and I feel we will be very successful." Bratkowski added. Dave Stireman, Phil Cooper, and Kevin Villars are the three quarterbacks Bratkowski was refering to. All three are splitting the job of quater-back in practice and all are doing well. All three seem to have good mobility and strong throwing arms. Stireman will start in the alumni game with Cooper and Villars both due to see plenty of action.
