Weber State heads into the 19th Annual Big Sky Track and Field Championship at the University of Montana in Missoula as one of the favorites to win the title. The Wildcats will face their biggest challenge for the title from rivals Idaho State, Nevada-Reno and host Montana. Last year Weber finished fifth. WSC is coming off of its best outdoor season ever. In all of the meets this spring, the 'Cats have either finished first or second. A number of school records were set and most of the athletes improved in their events from last year. Representing Weber at the conference meet will be 23 athletes. There will be six seniors, ten juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. Coach Chick Hislop said this year's seniorsBrian Appell. Rex Hohnholt. Bruce Perry. Randy Sparks, Jeff Swanger and ReggieYounger--are probably the best group of seniors he has had in his 12 years of coaching at WSC. Weber's strongest event going into the conference meet is without question the 3000-meter steeplechase. Rex Hohnholt leads this event with 8:41.0. a school record and the fastest time in the conference. Appell is next with the second fastest time in the conference with a 8:44.3. Both Hohnholt and Appell have qualified for the national meet to be held in Provo in two weeks. The Wildcats also have strength in Farley Gerber who has a 8:48.4 this year and Ron Davis who has a personal best of 8:48.0 but has only run 9:00.9 this spring. The Wildcat's are looking for a possible 1-2-3-4 finish in this event, a feat that has never been done in conference history. One of the strengths of this years team is a lot of quickness. Bruce Perry and Anthony Smith lead in this area. Both runners have turned in top performances in the quick races this spring. Perry will use his quickness in the 100. 200 and relays while Smith will use his in the 200. 400 and relays. Craig Fletcher and Chris Micek head up the middle distance crew. Fletcher, a school record holder in the in door 800. will run in the 800 and mile relay. Micek will also use his strength in the 800 and the 1500. Both runners are expected, judging from their times, ' to place high in each event. Another area that Weber has been strong in this spring is the hurdle area. The candidates in the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles will be Shawn Dorr, Randy Sparks, Steve Baty, Don Roberts and Steve Dick. Many times this year, the 110 crew has swept this event in the meets. The strong man will be Dorr. He has set the new school record in the 400 hurdles and has the third fastest time in both the 110 and 400 hurdles in the conference. The Wildcat's other strengths lie in the decathlon and in the field events. Jeff Swanger will be seeking his third conference crown in the decathlon, in which he holds the school and the conference records. Dick, who placed third last yes-: in the decathlon, will also be gunning for the title. In the field events the 'Cats have Bart Thompson in the pole vault.
