Show SIGNPOST May 21. 1982 Page 2 WSC faculty members receive distinguished professor awards Four Weber State College professors have been recognized as "Presidential Distinguished Professors." They are Dr. Richard M. Alston, professor of economics; W. Lee Dickson, professor of electronic engineering technology; Dr. Oren W. Moffett, professor of foreign languages; and Dr. Jean Bickmore White, professor of political science. The award is given annually to professors who have tuaght at WSC for at least three years. Recipients must be knowledgeable and up to date in their field and excel in effective, quality teaching. They are judged on their knowledge as well as their ability to effectively communicate to students and to motivate them towards continued learning, outside of the class room. Winners of the prestigious award receive a $2,000 cash award and a $1,000 expense-allowance to be used for professional development as approved by the academic vice president. Dr. Alston joined the WSC faculty in January of 1969. Since coming to WSC he has also served as a consultant to Wycoff Company, John Short & Associates, the United States Forest Service, and the states of Michigan and Utah. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. His Master's and Ph.D. degrees were awarded by Cornell University. Dr. Alston was recognized as "Outstanding Professor" at WSC in 1971 and "Professor of the Year" in 1974. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, the Western Economics Association, Forest History Society, the Midwestern Forest hi 4 Dr. Alston Economists Association, Association for Evolutionary Economics, and is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. Dr. Dickson has been a member of the WSC faculty since 1963. He came here after receiving his Master's degree from the University of Utah. Prior to that he had received his Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah where he graduated with high honors. One year after joining the WSC faculty, he received his PH.D. degree also from the U. of U. He was awarded the "Outstanding Young Faculty Award" from the American Society of Engineering Education in 1975, and the "Outstanding Teacher Award" from the WSC Department of Electrical Engineering Technology in 1979 and 1982. He has served on numerous college committees including the Faculty Senate, and the college-wide Tenure and Promotion Committees. Dr. Oren E. Moffett has taught French, Spanish, Italian and Foreign Language Teaching Methodology at WSC for the past sixteen years. He obtained his Baccalaureate, Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Utah. Dr. Moffett served 23 years with the U.S. Army during World War II, the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. Military assignments included ten years of diplomatic service in Rome, Italy; Washington D.C. and Buenos Aires, Argentina, and four years as a foreign language instructor at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point,' New York. Upon retiring from the military, he joined the WSC faculty in 1966. In 1979, he was a winner of the WSC Cortez Faculty Awards Competition. In the fall of 1981 he spent two months in the People's Republic of China, investigating their foreign language teaching methodology and lecturing at various universities there. Dr. White has been a member of the WSC faculty since September of 1969. Prior to coming to Weber she worked for several years as a reporter at the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News. She is also experienced in freelance writing, editing, advertising and publications. In 1971, she was recognized as "Professor of the Year" at WSC, and awarded the "Outstanding Faculty Member" in the School of Social Sciences in 1979. She originated and has continued to supervise the college's legislative and local governmental intern programs. Dr. White is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies, Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Society, the American Political Science Association, the Western Political Science Association, Mormon History Association and the American Society for Public Administration.Her civic activities include membership on the Davis County Board of Health from Dr. White 1968- 76; Utah Constitutional Revision Commission, 1969- 77; and she is a current member of the Utah State Board of Corrections.
