Bockwoldt, is the first WSC quarterback to be selected in a pro draft. Bockwoldt leaves this week to talk with Ram officials. "VW 2446 Wash. LJ1 Boulevard A versatile, articulate freshman WSC golfer - Matt Cole by Guy Yocom The dark-haired figure on the 18th green seemed incensed at his fortune on the links this particular day. He prepared to putt, and as a long, twisting 30-footer just curled out of the hole, a profusion of mild abuses and sour looks streamed from his expressive face. And after the lad had posted an impressivethree-under-par 69 for the day, one could only wonder what could possibly embitter a golfer who had fashioned such a fine round as that. Introducing Matt Cole, a stocky dilemma from Seattle, Washington who has recently done some earth shaking around Weber State golf circles and in so doing, practically insured a solid future for the Wildcats in years to come. Freshman A versatile, articulate freshman whose future with the link squad was in doubt earlier this year, Cole has attested to be something more than an average "comer" with good potential. After charting a low team score of 223 at the prestigious Sun Devil Classic at Phoenix, Ariz., a new look was in order for this self-styled fighter who, among other things, likes to box in his spare time. Last fall saw Cole experience enough problems to have his position on the team jeopardized by some poor rounds in several consecutive tournaments. After putting up several scores in the 80's, Cole reshuffled both his attitude and game to apply more work to the phase of his game that hurt him most concentration. "I would play 15 good holes and then blow it with a mental lapse of some kind," says Matt. "Usually a bad chip or rotten putt would ruin an - otherwise good round. Youth and inexperience can be held accountable for most of it, but my determination to get out of that slump eventually pulled me through." Solid, respective totals of 226 and 220 at these tournaments reinforced Cole's belief that the key to success lies in never giving up. "You can't say enough about being persistent and dogged on the golf course or anywhere else," he fathomed. "For me quitting has never been easy, and golf is the type of game that demands all you've got." It was just that philosophy that put Cole where he is today. Matt first wielded a golf club at the humble age of 13, thanks to the encouragement of an older fellow Cole knew back in Seattle. He first swung a rather ludicrous set of women's clubs, but soon convinced his father to buy an old set of Power Bilt irons. Intrigue There was an older fellow who played golf at the same course where Matt did, and it was he who instilled the first bit of intrigue about golf within Cole. "He told me stories about the world of pro golf and all its glamour, prestige, and history," recalls Cole. "Hockey was my first love but I soon decided to devote all my time and effort to golf. Cole also had the benefit of playing regularly with one John Tuft, who at the time, was one of the finest golfers in the State of Washington. Cole selected Weber State after council with Mike Gove, who, along with Rich Ecklund, comprise Matt's teammates and roommates in an off-campus apartment. "Mike really made the school sound attractive, and I was impressed with Mac Madsen and the program he had going here at Weber. I'm very satisfied with my decision to go to school here," explains Cole. Fervent Player Cole is a pure charger on the golf course, with a fervent style of play that coach Madsen likens to Arnold Palmer in his younger days. "I may never hit the ball like that guy," Matt laughs, "but I do have some reservations to having a crack at the pro tour someday. It's so tough to make a living out there nowadays; however, I'll keep an outlet of some kind available in case things don't work out."
