Special Literary Supplement SOMETHING SLEEPING WAKES cont. from Page 7 Frossusradiated the outrage that Lucky knew. His eyes had gone to a cold fire like Lucky's had and his ear hurt too perhaps even more than Lucky's did. It seemed that everything and everyone had gotten mixed together in confusion under the oppressive August air. The moistness and thickness and heaviness seemed to separate and define everything and everybody. Even the Forces of Good and Evil had become confused by then and the only pure things that hung in the air were fear and outrage and that queer sensation of something about to happen. And then it happened. It was somewhere in the third act. Lucky did not know how it had gotten there, inside the coarse folds of the black cheesecloth. He felt something at his ribs and when he reached inside the hole he found the handle. The edge of the knife sliced the black cheesecloth as he pulled it out and up so that Byrt Griswold or Prince Charming could see it. The knife was not in the script but Miss Lillian did not scream until she saw the handle protruding from Byrt Griswold's chest, not until after Lucky had found his target three times, not until she saw the trickling red on his white costume. Some of the men in the audience had begun to think about acting, but not in time to get to the stage before Frossus Cowper had pulled the knife from Byrt Griswold's chest. Frossus' eyes were wild and cold with the fire of rage. He and Lucky were alone on that stage. It seemed that the sum of all bewilderment had converged in Lucky's eyes; but Frossus knew. He held the men, black and white both, away from Lucky and from himself but he was not thinking of himself or of even Lucky. Frossus knew. Frossus' eyes alone could have kept the men at fear's length from them. It seemed as though the shots came too soon, as if the man in the balcony with the rifle had known, like Lucky had felt and Frossus had known, what would happen on that hot moist August night at the Old Cooper Opera House in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Frossus didn't even finish it before the lights went out: "Can't A long time ago in a galaxy jar, Jar away... 14 ',f i1 r TWENTICTH C6NTURY-FOX Presents A LUCASFILM LTD.
