(Photo by Dianne Sheldon) Assembly members by Melinda Sowerby Managing editor Academic Assembly called for the resignation of Mel Hampton, the assemblyman from the school of Humanities, in their meeting on Tuesday. The Assembly moved impeachment procedings be started if Hampton's resignation is not turned in by the Assembly's meeting next Tuesday. Hampton told Jon Bingham, academic vice president and chairman of the Assembly, he would turn in his resignation three weeks ago. However, as of Tuesday's meeting, Hampton still had not resigned. Hampton gave his reasons to Bingham for his resignation, saying he "had a busy school schedule and other obligations" which prevented him from being an effective assemblyman, according to Bingham. Doug Young, assemblyman from the school of Social Sciences, called for the resignation and impeachment proceedings, after noting that Hampton had not yet attended a meeting of the assembly. He added, "If one member of the body doesn't do his part, the whole Assembly loses power." Young asked if Hampton had set up a functioning area assembly within his school and was told by Bingham that he had not. Replace Hampton Young also suggested ap Friday, November 22, 1974 i V wants resignation; may be impeached plications be accepted from students in the Humanities area to replace Hampton with the Assembly making the final decision. Bingham said the Supreme Court would have to be consulted as to the procedure in selecting an assemblyman to replace Hampton.Ed Walker, assemblyman from the school of Natural Sciences, pointed out that the selection should be done by elections since the other assemblymen had been selected in that manner. In other matters, Young said he had taken Resolution number one passed last week before the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. He said their comments had been favorable with one exception. He said that exception was the clause stating only the depart-, ment chairman and the assembly ' know the students serving on the Tenure Committee. He said the faculty wanted that clause removed. Protect anonominity ' Young said there must be a clause protecting the anonominity of the students serving on the Tenure Committee because students wouldn't serve on the committee. He said the only time a student's anonominity could not be protected would be in the case of a faculty member not receiving OSHA locates 618 violations at Weber Six hundred and eighteen violations to the safety and health code colleges must comply with were found at Weber State College in a recent inspection made by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Most of the violations found at WSC were minor and many could be repaired readily. The violations included a lack of adequate exits signs, fire extinguishers marked improperly, wiring exposed at the splices and defective ladders. Some of the more expensive violations of the code included guard rails around the loading docks and in the stadium area, handrails, pin rail enclosures in the Fine Arts Building and guards for use around machinery. Dr. Joseph L. Bishop, president of Weber State, said the violations would be corrected as tenure who appealed it in a court of law. He stated this was an exception and wasn't common. Cathy Corey, assemblyman from the school of Health Occupations said in her department students would be scared to serve on the Tenure Committee without the protection because of possible repecussions on the part of the faculty. The Assembly decided not to act on the resolution but leave it as it is now stated. The Assembly also discussed the task force they recently formed at the request of Dr. Kay Evans concerning the Bachelor of General Studies. Bingham said a proposition on the new bachelors degree was passed by the Curriculum Committee and was now on the agenda before the faculty Senate. When asked if the task force was still needed, Bingham replied it was and there would be no major changes in the task forces duties. Bingham gave a report to the assembly on his visit to Brigham Young University. He said although they were in a different situation their assembly was working on some ideas that could be implemented at WSC. He gave the example of a reading program. This was where all the students read one book and it is brought into discussions in several classes. Ogden, Utah 84403 fast as the money will allow. However, he added, "at a time when we don't have any money to start with, I'm still more concerned about students. If this compliance order says we must do this (correct the violations) tomorrow throughout the system, it will take all our funds to do it." Other institutions Bishop said also, "If the ax comes down tomorrow to do these things, we have 618 violations. Can you imagine what the University of Utah or Utah State with all the older buildings would have to do?" According to the compliance notice, it must be posted for three days or until all the violations are corrected. Bishop also commented on a speech he gave before the Salt Lake City Rotary Club on Nov. 5. The speech has been of some controversy. He stated the major thrust of his speech was often a law is enacted because of a need and the interpretation of that law is then twisted. In his speech, he called for the decentralization of Washington to get the authority back on a local level. He added his speech was not directed to THIS PLUG WAS replaced with a grounding wire to comply with the standards set by OSHA. Other violations have yet to be repaired to comply with them. Reverse effect That comment was "discrimination in any form sometimes has the reverse effect." Bishop pointed out there us all kinds of evidence that it's true. He said he was disappointed that someone would "take my speech related to the Washington bureaucracy and suggest that we don't care about blacks and Chicanos." He added it was erroneous. He stated "if the government keeps focusing on the numbers you have people fighting over blacks or Chicanos or women and their salaries keep going up and you find yourself discriminating against qualified other people." Bishop said it disturbed him that by his saying there shouldn't be discrimination against whites any more than blacks, it was an indicator that he didn't care about blacks. He said that attitude made him angry because, "I care about people." i |
