Show Sept. 28, 1973 Signpost Page 7 Minorities offered fellowships Graduate fellowships, including full tuition, $300 book allowance and a monthly stipend of $250 have been offered to minority students by the Ford Miss Indian applications due Oct. 8 Applications for Miss Indian Utah are now available for girls throughout the state between the ages of 18 and 26 and are of at least one-half Indian descent. Deadline for submitting application is Oct. 8, according to pageant committee chairman Mrs. Jan Sequaptewa McNiel of Salt Lake City. Applications are available from pageant head-quarters at 940 W. 2nd S., Salt Lake City 84104. Applicants must be residents of Utah for at least one year. Judges, all full-blooded Indians, will select the queen on her knowledge of tribal history, customs, and traditions as well as her own Indian talent and-or craft. The latter criteria should be above average. The fourth annual Miss Indian Utah pageant is scheduled Oct. 27 at Sundance Ski Resort in Provo Canyon at 7:30 p.m. A buffet will be served at 6 p.m. at $4 per plate with proceeds going to the Miss Indian Utah Scholarship Fund. Sundance owner, actor Robert Redford, will attend the pageant to crown the queen and her court if his movie shooting schedule will permit it. Prizes for the three top winners include a $500 scholarship to the winner, a $300 scholarship for the first runner-up, and a $200 scholarship for the secondrunner-up. Previous winners were Miss Loretta Tsosie, current queen, a Navajo; Miss Joyce Sequaptewa, a Hopi; and Miss Glenna Jenks, Ute, who later was Miss Indian BYU and runner-up to Miss Indian America. Former director appointed WSC conference head A former executive director of the Salt Lake Community Action Agency has been appointed director of conferences and seminars at Weber State College. Andy Gallegos, a Salt Lake City native, will work in the Division of Continuing Education. He will be responsible for educational conferences and special institute programs, replacing former director Lee Beckner. Mr. Gallegos has also been marketing manager for United Airlines in San Francisco, Calif. He received a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Utah specializing in marketing. His duties at Weber State will include assisting and planning the development of educational and community conferences, seminars and workshops as well as special programs for students, faculty and staff. Limited in the number of fellowships to be offered, the Ford Foundation will accept applications from minority students planning to "pursue full-time study towards doctoral degree in Arts or Sciences," or "students who hold a first post-baccalaureate professional degree" (MBA, MPA, MSW or M.ED.) Application deadline will be Jan. 5, 1974. Persons applying for these fellowships must be of either American Indian, Black American, Mexican American or Puerto Rican descent, and must have these qualifications : -They must be United States Citizens. -They must be planning for or enrolled in a U.S. school offering a doctorial degree in their field. -They must be planning to en ter or be engaged in a career of higher education. These fellowships are available in two forms: "Course of Study Awards" or "Dissertation Awards," and can provide assistance up to a maximum of four years . The Course of Studv Awards are available for one year and be renewed up to two years. These awards will be for students attending full-time course work preparation for the qualifying examinations. The Dissertation Awards are for candidates that have completed all requirements for the doctorate and will be engaged in fulltime on their dissertation. They are for one year and not renewable. Awards will be for the 1974-75 academic year, and will start July 1974. Names of winners will be announced March 25, 1974.
