The Mexico study travel program, considered "successful" by tour director Leland A. Walser, returned Sunday, Sept. 16, after five weeks in Mexico. After leaving Mexico City Thursday night, students traveled by train to Juarez and crossed the border to El Paso. Saturday and Sunday nights were spent traveling to Ogden. Classes in Guadalajara were conducted in both Spanish and English with areas in civics, anthropology, archeology, and other related subjects. Living with families while studying in Guadalajara, helped students with their Spanish and also international relations. Climbing pyramids Highlights of the trip included visiting the fishing village of Melaque, going to the National Folklore Ballet, climbing ancient Aztec pyramids, and generally enjoying the friendly Mexican atmosphere.Activities apart from the outlined agenda included six students being ordained into "mestizo-hood" by Dr. Dan Gallego at the top of the pyramid at Teotihuacan. Advisors for the tour included Leland A. Walser, Dr. Daniel Gallego, Dr. Larry Doman, Dr. 0. Whitney Young and his wife Lucille. Participants were Mike Allen, Blaine Scott, Roger Flores, David Dee, Frank Dillingham, Melvin Borup, Gary Ortega, Doug Young, Gary Hess, Ira Hatch, and Shannon Smith. Gayla DeGroot, Judy Young, Chris Hill, Janice Morgan, Jane Butterfield, Vickie Spiekerman, Meredith Tensmeyer, Shannon Banks, Susan Lefgren, and Janet Isaacson.
