According to the director's of the intramural events, some top Cinder crew Thinclads of Weber State are looking for Big Sky honors this weekend in the finals at Missoula, Montana. Weber athletes to keep an eye on in competition will besprinter-jumper Randy Montgomery, who has the fastest 100 and 220 times in the league and Frank Reilly, freshman shotput and discuss ace. Willie Sojourner will be high in the air on the high jump as he already has jumps of 6' 9" this spring. 880 men Jaime Nunez and Dave Trujillo are expected to finish well along with hurdler Gary Dribnak and long jumper Sessions Harlan. Also expected to finish well are javelin ace Darol Wintle and pole vaulters Todd Parker and Mike Jones. Vomen's action The women's tennis team takes to the road this weekend in Provo with games Friday and Saturday.Last weekend, the softball squad and tennis team traveled to Logan. The softball crew placed second with only one loss to BYU 4-3. The tennis team placed third. Otyokwa won the blue paddle-ball championship singles and the doubles. Janet Surnmerill was the singles champ while Marilyn Cox and Bev Swan took the doubles. Tickets for the Women's Intramural Banquet are now on sale. They may be obtained from any council member or at the gym. The cost is $2.40 and will be held May 20 at the Chuck-a-Rama. In past golf action, the faculty and staff picked up first place honors with a total of 626 points. Sigma Delta Pi finished second with 631. Excelsior "A" Beta Phi Beta, Delta Phi and Phoenix finished in this respective order. Kurt Wallace of Excelsior "B" had the individual low score with 145 followed by Dr. Ron Galli of the faculty and staff with 146 and Jan Bryan of the Wedge Heads Independents with 147. Other low scorers were Max Neeves of Excelsior "A" and Dennis Barton of the Wedge Heads Independents. Weber State College will host the Rocky Mountain Regional finals for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association at the Golden Spike Coliseum May 22, 23, and 24 at 8 p.m. each evening. Thursday evening, May 22, will be Weber State College student night and all students will be admitted free with their activity card. Free admission is being given to the students due to their fine backing of the Rodeo club this year. Three saddles will be given away during the rodeo. One lucky adult ticket will be selected for a saddle as well as one going to the all-around cowboy and one for the all around cowgirl. A saddle similar to the ones to be given away is on display in the technical building. The top three individuals in each event and the top two teams will represent the Rocky Mountain Region at the Collegiate National Finals June 25 - 29 at Deadwood, South Dakota. Special features for the rodeo will be special fraternity and sorority activities. Tim Oyler, a professional bullfighter and clown will also be featured as well as Wayne Wilcox of the Blue Door challenging the other Ogden clothing stores to a riding contest. Hardball action Saturday Weber State nine will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for a conference pending two game series with Idaho State. The Cats are currently 8-2 after picking up wins over both Montana and Montana State teams Saturday and Monday. Two wins will assure the Wildcats at least a tie for the title. Wednesday the Cats go to Salt Lake for two games with the University of Utah. .U 3 IT'S A TOSS UP ROY STRONG MOTORS ( ' -if r ""T i K 'Nr f : 0 j uA lA. 1 1 Justis Thigpen Athlete of Year Annual event 17 SC honors athletes at recognition banquet Justis Thigpen, Weber's star guard basketballer, was honored as the top senior athlete last Tuesday evening at the 11th annual Athletic Recognition Banquet.Thigpen was the most valuable player in the. Big Sky Conference and was also picked on the all-star team from the Far West Regional tourney. Garnering the honors for the top Wildcat scholar was tennis ace Keith Cox, who carries a 3.69 grade point average insoc-, iology. Randy Montgomery, Weber's brilliant sprinter and also a member of the football squad, received two awards as he was honored as the top track man and I .is- -w ' ",. "... ; . ' - Keith Cox Scholar of Year also as the top multiple sports participant. Picking up the honors as the top football player was Halvor Hagen. Hagen is a defensive end and a third - round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys. Basketball honors went to Weber's massive center,. Willie Sojourner. Other awards for the various sports went to Steve Gardner, baseball; Dick Sparks, tennis; Jim Linke, golf; Bob Wallace, cress country; Ray Miller, skiing; Dennis Jordan, swimming; and Jerry Hull, wrestling.
