'judd to the Slate Svutlievn Experiment Farm Wednesday, and was gratified to see the amount of work that has been accomplished there. The ride past the beautiful fields of green lueern and grain, orchards in full bloom, and thru avenues of cottonwool! trees just bursting burst-ing into leaf was very pleasant indeed. The land for the farm has all been ploughed and water has been run thru the furrows to settle the land. Besides the foreman, Geo. F. Jarvis, four hands were at work, two leveling and two trimming cedar posts for the fencing. The fence is to be four barbed wires with a two by four scantling on top; posts, which will have bark trimmed off and whitewashed, will stand seven feet apart; a live hedge of Osage orange will be planted inside the Wire fence. The forty-acre site is square, and in the centre will be built the superintendent's cottage. The brick and rock for this purpose is on the ground and work will commence on it right away; the foundation has been grouted eighteen inches deep and is ready for the rock. Four avenues, each thirty-three feet wide, will lead to the Supt's. cottage; the entrance to each avenue will be exactly in the centre of each side of the square; apple trees will form the avenue on the north, pear trees the south avenue, prunes the east, and cherries will form the avenue on the west. The trees, from the Pioneer Nursery, Salt Lake City, are on the way from Modena and will be planted next week. 1000 choice varieties vari-eties of vines are enroute from California, Cali-fornia, besides which the farm has 10,000 cuttings on hand. The Experiment Experi-ment Farm will be a beautiful place when everything is gotten into shape, and will prove a blessing to the people of "Dixie." |
