Show ROBERTS NOT SEATED. Commktee Appointed to investigate Charges Preferred Against Him. Tbe following telegram waa received by Pres. D. D. MeArthur Thursday: Salt Lake, Dec. C. D. D. MeArthur: By vote of 302 to 30 the House of Representatives Rep-resentatives yesterday declared B. H. Roberts disqualified from sitting as member of that body, so long as charges of a misdemeanor were pending pend-ing against him. Special committee of nine was appointed to investigate case and report. Until this is done Roberts will bo excluded. But little doubt entertained in Washington as to final result, which is generally expected expect-ed will exclude Roberts without reference refer-ence to evidence against him. Two Republican members voted in his favor the other 28 being Democrats. Of the special committee six are Republicans and three Democrats. Roberts spoke nearly an hour yesterday and in his speech declared Pres. McKinley had appointed polygamists to oiiice with fuli knowledge of the facts. This created cre-ated sensation and Grosvenor the administrative ad-ministrative mouthpiece denounced the statement as false. General conclusion con-clusion is investigation wiil be sham, and no doubt whatever bit Roberts will be deprived of his seat. Through Roberts statement about polygamists now holding ofiiccs, the early removal of every polygamist- post master in Utah will undoubtedly occur. In face of that declaration it will be impossible for Pres. McKinley to retain them in (i":ce. This is the conclusion in 'Washington. |
