All Europe mourns over the foul murder of the Empress of Austria, who met her death at the hands of an anarchist at Geneva Saturday evening. The empress nas well beloved throughout the world, and telegrams of condolanee j are pouring in upon the bereaved emperor. It appears that her majesty was walking from her hotel to the landing place of the steamer at about 1 o'clock when an Italian anarchist suddenly ' appeared, and approaching her, stabbed her to the heart. The empress fell, got up again and was carried to the steamer unconscious; the captain e-turned e-turned and the empress was carried to the Hotel Beaurivage. where she expired. ex-pired. The assassiu is a man named Luchoni, and the death blow was inflicted by the use of a small tile, which has since been found where the murderer threw it, after committing the deed. The assassin is in the hands of the officers, and does not deny that he committed the deed. The last words of the empress were addressed to the attendant. Recovering Recover-ing consciousness for a moment she feebly asked what had happened. As yet the authorities have found no confirmation of tho report that the murder was part of an anarchist conspiracy, con-spiracy, but a dozen persons with whom the assassin associated have been arrested for examination. No strangers are allowed to approach the coffin of the murdered Empress Elizabeth. The body has been embalmed em-balmed and is dressed in white. The doctors photographed the wound, but the plate will be destroyed. It is understood Emperor Francis Joseph will not leave Austria, but will send a high court officer to bring the body to Austria. The assassin maintains his cynical demeanor, and frankly congratulates himself on the success of the crime.' He says: 1;I am an anarchist, but I belong to no committee. I work on my own initiative. Let there do as they please with me. That is my stroke." The Empress of Austria was born December 24. 1837. She was the daughter of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, and was married to Francis Joseph, emporer of Austria and king of Hungary, April 24, 1854. They had three children, the Archduchess Gis-sola, Gis-sola, who is married to Prince Lvritpold of Bavaria; the Auehduke Pudolph, who married Princess Stephania of Belguim, andwho was (seemingly) assassinated as-sassinated iuJlSSfi, aud the Archduchess Maria Valeria, who married the Archduke Arch-duke Franz Salvator of Austria-Tus- cany. The late empress was an enthusiastic horsewoman. |
