Matthew Batty is suffering intense pain from the bite of some insect or reptile. He was bitten last week while walking up the ditch, but paid very little lit-tle attention to it at the time, but it began to swell and cause pain at night and has been getting worse since. Benjamin Granger and Miss Ella Bring tiurst were married in the St. George Temple last Wednesday. Jepson and Chas. Workman are our delegates to County convention:, the first-named gentleman took a grist with him to the Washington Roller Mills. We regret to report the departure of Sr. S. J. Wright and son, Earnest. They leave today for Salt Lake City, which place they intend making their home. The best wishes of the people go with them. We are happy also in the fact that Miss Edith Hunter is again with us. She has been spending the summer with relatives at Deseret. Her labors as Church organist will again be greatly great-ly appreciated. We are very happy indeed to announce an-nounce the return of Elder Morris Wilson, Wil-son, who for the past three years has been laboring as a missionary in the Southern states. He enjoyed his labors immensely and returned in the best of health. As we have no water in our ditches, owing to recent floods Ailing them with sand, our crops are beginning to dry. The mill race here is in a poor condition condit-ion from the same cause; Albert Strat-ton Strat-ton and a small company of men commenced com-menced work on it a few days ago, but for some cause or other most of them have quit their job, and it is doubtful whether the race will bo completed before be-fore the return of the proprietor Mr. Parker, who is now up in southern Idaho prospecting. Our mountain wood-road was also damaged by the floods, and it is estimated that it will cost $100. to make it in a passable condition. con-dition. X. Y. Z, Virgin city, Utah, Sept. 8, 1898. . OVERT OX, NEVADA. On Sunday afternoon about 5 o'clock, while several children were playing with and around a swing at Brig Whit-more Whit-more V place. Hazel, a daughter of Davie J. Cox was swinging when the rope broke. She fell on her head and sustained fatal injuries. She was helped help-ed by her companions and walked five or six rods before she became unconscious. All that possibly could be done for her was done but she succumbed to her injur iesat 11 o'clock at night, Her father was near Kingman, Ariz., at the time, but was sent for and arrived in time for the funeral, which was held at 12 noon on Tuesday. He had a good social time with his many friends in the sunny south. . There will be it wedding here next Wednesday, the 14th inst. Enock Naeg-le of Toquerville will marry Miss Elnora Taylor of this place. Neal and Miss Sophie Forsyth passed through her Friday enroute to their home at Pinto. Kanab people are in hopes that they can persuade Miss Macfarlane cf St. George to stay all winter. A ten-year-old son of Brig Stewart dislocated his elbow Monday. It was replaced and is doing well. Republican convention last evening; Jos. E. Robinson, was nominated for representative. Democrats meet this evening. The weather has been bright and somewhat cooler during the past week; although it has sometimes looked threatening we have had no rain. Kanab conference commenced in real earnest yesterday. Apostle Lyman addressed ad-dressed a full house in the morning and afternoon, during the latter meeting he received a telegram announcing the death of President Woodruff. Macfar-lane Macfar-lane who stayed to take care of her daughter. Frank Swapp met with a serious accident ac-cident on Wednesday. He was leading a horse tied to the horn of his saddle out of the wash, nine miles above Johnson, John-son, when it hung back and fell over, the side, pulling the other horse and rider with him. All fell a distance of about twenty feet into the wash. One horse was instantly killed, the other had to be, and Mr. Swapp escaped with a badly sprained ankle. Banak. Kanab, Utah, Sept. 10, 1S03. , 4V-. iu-i.i.r.vci:, Some larntw Fdc pes. Miss Adelade Jackson, of Toquer-ville, Toquer-ville, had a narrow es -.ape from death on Tuesday. She was returning home from Provo, where she has been for the past eight weeks with her brother. George, who is under the care of Dr. Allen there. When near the Elack ridge the horses became frightened, and bolted, throwing Miss Adelade out of the buggy between the wheels. Her dress caught and she was dragged some distance, sustaining severe cuts and bruises. She laid over here two days and was then removed home where she is improving nicely. Her sister, Annis. met her at Cedar City and returned with her. Mrs. Willis and her son of Toquerviiie stopped the team and brought the ladies to John M. Allen's place at Bellevue. On Wednesday, Peter Anderson, the owner of the team and buggy sent his son, Burt, for them. The buggv was damaged but little and he soon had things fixed and startrd for home. He had not gone a quarter of a mile when "bis horses commenced to kick and bolt ed. On turning around the short bend of the dugway they ran close to the edge and hurled the buggy over: it rolled clean to the bottom of the hill. As the buggy rolled over Burt fell amongst the rocks and the buggy rolled rol-led over him without hurting him in the least. The buggy was smashed to pieces. G. O. Bellevue, Utah, Sept. 16, 1S9S. Mrs. Eliza Hepworth, who has been sick with pneumonia, gave birth to a son yesterday at 5 a. m., but the little fellow only lived until 12 o'clock.
