Show NOME UNDER MARTIAL LAW. Many Acts of Lawlessness Responsible For Tresent Condition. News that martial law had been proclaimed pro-claimed at Nome City by General Ran. dall, in charge of the United States troops in that district, was brought by the steamer St. -Paul, which has arrived ar-rived at San Francisco, thirteen days from St. Michael. The necessity for martial law arose out of the jumping of mining claims and other acts of lawlessness. law-lessness. The St. Paul also reports a great many cases of smallpox aud typhoid fever at Nome. When she sailed it was thought, however, that the further spread of the disease had been checked. The St. Paul brought fifty-four passengers pas-sengers and 81,300,000 in gold dust, the bulk of which was consigned to the Alaska Commercial company. Of this amount about 8125,000 was from the Cape Nome district. |
