Show I.ITTLKFIEl.H. Citizens at this Enterprising Little Burg re Endeavoring to Secure More Water. Henry Frehner has gone to the Key West mine on business. Your correspondent has just returned from a visit to the canal. An organization organiz-ation has just been effected of ten men, each subscribing $100., for the purpose of tunneling into the hill at the Narrows Nar-rows of the Virgin river above the Beaverdams. The object is to tap the water all in one body, that now comes out in different places, and apply it on the bench land south of the Virgin between be-tween Littlefield and the Narrows, thus bringing uuder cultivation over 2000 acres of very fertile soil. The company com-pany believes that by tunneling from 100 to 200 feet they can secure most of the water coming out below the Narrows. Nar-rows. It had been proposed by some that a dam be put across the river to raise it from 40 to 60 feet, but it is believed be-lieved that tunneling will be a cheaper and better method. If the company succeeds in its experiment, there will be ah opening for' a number of good industrious home-seekers, as there is no doubt it is the best fruit region in this part of the country; the soil and climate is unsurpassed, The boys also tell me they were waited upon by a representative of a rich California firm that is investigating with a view to putting in a dam across the Virgin below be-low the Narrows to be 150 feet long on the bottom and 300 feet on top, from 75 ' to 100 feet wide and 45 feet high, to be constructed of stone and cement. The boys have just completed taking soundings sound-ings of the river and will report to the -company, who is expected to arrive with an engineer ready to begin work, j it is proposed that a power plant be made that can be utilized for running a large roller mill and for other purposes, pur-poses, as it is believed that the Rio Grand Western R. R. will push its way thru the Narrows towards the coast, thus helping us to build up and opening open-ing northern markets for our fruit and early vegetables, besides opening up our mining resources. |
