Show Navy Reservists Here For Flight Training College Quota for Glider Pilot Trainees Filled, Reports Miles Additional Navy V-5 reservists arrived Wednesday in St. George for secondary ground and flight training under the Dixie junior college summer C. P. T. program. These trainees have come as far as Kansas on the east and Oakland Oak-land on the west. Other Navy men arrived last week for elementary training under un-der the Ventura junior college program. The remainder of the Dixie and Ventura quotas are expected to arrive this week, and plans are laid to initiate their ground and flight training Saturday Satur-day or Monday. Glider Pilot Applicants The Dixie junior college quota of glider pilot applicants is now filled, pending final report on mental and physical examinations. An effort was made by the college to bring this program to the attention at-tention of all prospective draftees, as this training program extends considerable advantage to those persons who are slated for military mili-tary service and can meet the mental, physical and age requirements require-ments set up for this program. The college received approximately approxi-mately 25 applications for this training, which is sufficient to fill the quota of 10 assigned after mental and physical eliminations have been made. The new hangar is nearing completion com-pletion and is now in service sheltering the airplanes and equipment equip-ment of the Bassett and Phelps (Continued on page eight) Navy Flight Training (Continued from first page) flying service. Pres. Glenn E. Snow, received priorities and permission per-mission to build the hangar on Tuesday of this week. This was a relief to all concerned as the materials were used and the building nearly completed. ( Flight tests were conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday by Inspector In-spector Omby of the C. A. A. This concluded the training of the instructor in-structor quotas assigned here last May for training with Anderson and Bassett in connection with the college ground instruction. Mr. Anderson has advised the college col-lege that new quotas will be assigned as-signed here in the near future, and preparations are being made to care for this group along with the primary, secondary and cross country quotas that are now in training. All Operations Here Mr. Bassett has moved his operation op-eration formerly located at Baker, Calif., to St. George and is now occupying the new hangar to capacity. ca-pacity. Plans are being considered consid-ered to move a small hangar from California to shelter the remainder re-mainder of Mr. Bassett's equipment. equip-ment. The Dixie Flying club is also considering an addition to the new hangar to shelter the club's airplane. It is urged in the interest of safety that all persons stay away from the airport during hours of darkness, and that parents do not permit children to visit the airport air-port unless accompanied and looked look-ed after by a competent adult Townspeople are advised to refrain re-frain from handling the ships or touching the propellers, or control surfaces. Children and many adults do not realize the danger of being too close to a moving propeller, or of handling the propeller pro-peller of a ship while parked. "Aircraft propellers should be treated with the respect which a sensible person accords a loaded gun." |
